The most notable recessionproof industries used to be the vice industries: tobacco, alcohol, and pornography—the things people turn to in difficult times. But a new book called 150 Best Recession-Proof Jobs by Laurence Shatkin finds there are jobs to be found in more virtuous business sectors.

Here are Shatkin's top 10:

  1. Computer systems analysts
  2. Network systems and data communications analysts
  3. Network and computer systems administrators
  4. Registered nurses
  5. Teachers, postsecondary
  6. Physical therapists
  7. Physicians and surgeons
  8. Dental hygienists
  9. Pharmacists
  10. Medical and health services managers

I thinks nursing is a wonderful rewarding career. However,when you think of healthcare, nursing is not the only career option. Everyone can not be a nurse, even if everyone wanted too. I believe that many have set false expectations for nurses. There are many new graduate RNs that are unable to find work. There was previously a nursing shortage and in some regions it still is. However, the shortage closes in every year. The were many previous nurses who left the occupation for many different reasons, but have now returned. There are thousands of new nurses graduating every year. I think healthcare is more stable that many other occupations but it not 100% guaranteed. No occupation really is! The are also other health related occupations that one can consider such as,Respiratory Therapist, Radiology Technologist, Surgical Technician, Paramedic and Sonographer to name a few. These are all needed health professions and can be acquired through as little as one to two years of college. These health careers are also stable but again no career is 100%.

Postsecondary teachers are not high school or middle school teachers. Postsecondary means that they teach in a Community College or College/University.

There have been lay-offs and hiring freezes in the elementary and secondary public education sectors. Try private and charter schools many of which are still hiring. Or just substitute to wait out the bad economy and get your foot in the door.

I keep seeing that most job security sites speak of jobs in health care. What is not said is it takes years of school and on site training at low or no pay to be trained. There are jobs in health care because any training in the medical field is hard and most people can't or do not want to go through it. If it was easy we would not be so short of staff. Also sites say there are demands for doctors, gee, can I be a doctor next week, not the 10 to 15 years of school it takes to become one.
