Somebody needs to terminate this Liz Wrongmouth so she can write a real story about unemployment once she feels whats it's like when her butt gets fired and kicked to the the curb.

Lets see if she thinks she is so much better above everyone else then. Let her join the trenches. I don't think she has much real life experiences and has been sheltered all her life. She is so ignorant and not very bright. You need to find a writer that is wiser and more mature with real life experiences.

US NEWS you are clueless of what is happening around the country. I do not care to hear your fancy crap crapety crap about what your numbers are showing. I know what I have been experiencing and am sure others have been on the same boat as well. Finding a job if you over 50 is wishful thinking in our days. I have tried even jobs that pay $10 dollars an hour and they will mot hire me because looking at my resime they automatically declare me overqualified. Of course, why would someone hire you for a minimum wage job if you were making over 50,000 in your last job? US NEWS I am drpping my subscription because od this idiotic article. What a bunch of morons indeed to write such a piece of garbage. Leave us alone in our pain - soon you will not be selling your crappy publication because mobody will be able to afford it. What comes around goes around.

I think that it is rediculous that Congress is not provideing longer unemployment benefits for people over 50. We are the ones who actually have given up hope finding a job in today's economy. It harder for people over 50 to get a job when times were better - you can forget about it right now! It is insane, I have been looking for a job for a year and ahlf now after I was laid off from a job that paid me 57 thousand dollars. Most of the lower level/salary jobs I apply to tell me that I am overqualified.

Off topic - Problem with website:

What is wrong with this website - is it as slow for you as its is for me? My cursor barely moves on the screen. US News you can do a better job with your website. I have not experience anything like it in any news/media websites.

You are a category 5 moron if you think your numbers can somehow make sense of what is really happening out there. We will be out in the streets with pitchforks before this is all over. The events to unfold regarding unemployment they say will surpass that of the great depression era where 3 in 10 were unemployed. Think of the numbers you've just reported since they will not receive an extension will not have an even greater chance of losing their homes and there will be a new wave of home foreclosures this country has never seen before fueling the spiral even more. You thought 2008 was rough I scared for my life for 2009!!! People can't bear the fact that there are billions upon billions handed out to by the government to the perpetrators of this crisis instead of the average joe who worked an honest living for 50 years only to live in the streets. Neighborhoods will have to band together opening schools stadiums and public buildings to accommodate the thousands of homeless people needing shelter and food before this is over. As usual you reporters and the media along with the government will be reactionary. Educate yourself go out once in a while and talk to people in your neighborhood instead of basing your moronic article off of silly stats

I understand what you are saying about the extension inadvertantly causing the unemployment rate to go up.

However, you are wrong about the extension making people lazy and want to collect EASY money.

Do you have a job? Would you rather make $362.00 before taxes a week? My husband is going to school full time to earn an associates degree at the age of 50. He is doing a 2 year degree in 15 months. Before he started school, he was applying for every job that was advertised, and only got 2 interviews. How DARE you say that it makes people just say that they are looking for work so they can collect more unemployment benefits. Do you know what it's like to spend months trying to get a job? To go from earning $55,000 a year to collecting $17,000? There are no new jobs, in case you haven't read a newspaper lately, they are all going away.

Fat cats are fat because they eat us. When the benefits run out do we get an extension like the fat cats? They don't want us to get it because they have their fat paws on billions and we get in the way. Is it possible the common guy will get fed up with this big business program to continue the golf and club, resort lifestyle extension for you fat cats? I say give the fat cats the 300 a week and see how they do.

i guess 1620 monthly from unemployment is the same as my 7000 a month job.

Liz, as you can see by the amount of attention that has been paid to this article, the vast majority of those unemployed ARE actively looking for work. I understand that you were posting an article based on "interesting data," but the article does come across as a slap in the face to those who are out of work. Even the title is insulting. My first question is why your editor did not read that blurb and immediately dismiss it? The tilt in the article tends to lean toward the notion that those that are unemployed are trying to milk the system. The fact is there are tens of millions out there (counted or uncounted) that are devastated by what is going on. The max benefit in most states is $365. Tell me why anyone would want to milk those figures? Most qualify for less. And this whole 13 week benefit is a joke to begin with. The devil is in the details. Yes, you may qualify for 13 weeks, OR you will qualify for HALF of your maximum benefit amount. Whichever is less. I wonder how many people really qualify for those 13 weeks. What they really get are 6-8 weeks. So automatically the government is shamming the American population by even promoting those statistics and not relaying the other side of the agenda. Right now we are hearing tons of news about bailing out the auto industry. A vote that will most likely pass in Congress but fail in the Senate, because they will want to protect Bush from having to veto the bill in his last days. God help America if an unemployment extension is attached to that Stimulus package, or you will see a new level of outrage from the American people unseen as of late. If I were you, I'd remove the article. It's biased, one dimensional, not balanced and presents a one-sided story to a multifaceted, and extremely sensitive subject.

In case you haven't noticed....you just made a HUGE mistake! I too am unemployed. This is the 4th time since W has been in office. I am a good worker and show up everyday...yet I'm released from my job. Here in Michigan the unemployment rate is almost 10 percent!!! For every job they get 300 applicants!!! How on earth can one get a job with numbers like this? I agree to that may all the money given for the financial relief should have gone into creating more jobs....not spa trips!!

May god given President Elect Obama the stregnth to help all of us who voted for him.

See the rest of you in the food bank lines....

about this topic when they ARE employed.

I was making 20/hr for most of last year with a major fortune 500.

I went from taking home nearly 700 a week after taxes, to just half that on unemployment.

I cant even find a customer service job for 10/hr right now.

I would rather work.

Your article is misleading and will only foster those who are fortunate enough to have a fair paying job, to look down on those who just got a pink slip.

remember, you can only collect unemployment if you were laid off, NOT fired, Or QUIT.

check into it.
