Colleges and universities across the U.S. are struggling with the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. State university systems in Georgia, California, and New York are firing employees, postponing maintenance and cutting library subscriptions. Among private schools, Middlebury College in Vermont is canceling student trips and Colorado College, in Colorado Springs, said it will chop at least $500,000 from its budget.

The odds of landing a part-time job at department store operator Bealls Outlet Stores Inc. this holiday season are slimmer than getting into Harvard: It's one out of every 45.

Don't think the chances are any better at 7-Eleven. One California store received more than 100 applicants in a week and a half for jobs that pay $8.50 per hour — and the retailer doesn't even usually hire holiday workers.

Call and complain to management at local businesses, have your friends and family do the same. for instance call management and say the clerk smelled like alcohol if you have enough friend call and say the same thing there will be a job opening. Call management and say that the waitress was rude and you won't be back have several friends and family do it over a period of 2 or 3 weeks a job position will open up. Call management and say the bus boy at the pizza place was paying too much interest to your pre-teen daughter have friends call and say the same a position will open up. If you go into a business and see a large number of hispanics call immigration ans say you "know" because of a en law of some other reason that they are hiring illegal aliens even if they don't hire illegal aliens lot of people have arrest warrants they don't know about so people will be arrested and loose their jobs for missing work. Call the bar owners and say the bartender was giving out free drinks to her friends and not to you have several relatives call and say the same thing. Call management and say the cashier at the grocery store kept looking down your shirt have several other women do the same thing a cashier position will open up. just make sure you have applications already turned in at the businesses and don;t use your real name when you call to complain don;t forget about caller ID use your head.

There are no jobs. What does Liz Wolgemuth not understand about this? Is this the US NEWS site or is this just all opinion? Better start writing about the lack of jobs and how state service's are being overrun and funds unavailable because this Republican President and his Republican counterparts in the House and Senate refuse to pass a stimulus and actually have the audacity to try and pass the Columbia Free Trade Deal on the backs of the unemployed and Medicaid recipients. They even refuse to pass heating assistance for folks in New England who are now poised to both starve as well as freeze to death this winter. Start reporting what is really going on in the job market now. The people know and are tired of being placated by empty articles. Start reporting the truth about what Americans are facing or give this space to something and somebody else. It would be better served as ad space, though I doubt US News has any extra sponsors right now, except for maybe the drug companies. They seem to be doing fine. Liz do your job. These are not easy times and the days of sugar coating and easy articles are over, unless you want to be criticized and blasted for these fluff pieces everyday.

No Question it is tough out there. Still there are companies hiring but NOT advertising these openings. There is only one place to find these un advertised job, visit www.linkup.com, where we capture only jobs from company websites. Last month there were over one million jobs on the site. What is even better is the job descriptions average about two pages long which is important because a job seeker can use a lot more search terms in order to find a hit.

I hope your toughest critics find this helpful and useful.

It is easy to tell people what they should do when you don't have to do it yourself. If you did do it yourself, you might find out how useless your so-called tips are. I have gone beyond what you suggest and am still not able to get a job. It's funny...you have a job telling other people how to get jobs. So if everyone gets jobs, will you finally (and deservedly) be unemployed?

Gee, thanks for the "tips". But I must ask-do you have any idea of what is going on in the job market? Because if you did, you wouldnt be writing articles like that one.
