Gawker Media owner Nick Denton tells Silicon Alley Insider: "You could argue that we're being perversely conservative," after his online media company reportedly lays off several employees and cuts the hours of others, despite ad revenues that were nearly 40 percent higher in November, compared with a year ago.

Denton wrote in his blog last month that other media companies are "sleepwalking into economic extinction," with cost-cutting measures and payroll cuts too small to be proper preparation for the major declines in advertising spending he's anticipating.
