They know that community engagement happens when they work hand-in-glove with community partners, families, staff, and others toward a shared vision for their school, develop the capacity to drive the vision forward, and share accountabil- ity for the results. ,

It is sick to listen to unionized workers pee and moan about what they ought to be paid and how loyal they are. It's time to deregulate the car industry by letting Detroit go bankrupt. Let the unions win a Pyrrhic victory by not giving in their communist principles. After all, no job is better than a cheap job, isn't it?

jimmy of MD 3:30PM December 19, 2008

If the unions want to tell Detroit what salaries ought to be, shouldn't Detroit be able to tell the union the same?

I do not agree with the comments made. The Senators are out to destroy the American Auto Industry. Why should the UAW workers receive lower wages and less benefits. Why don't top management receive lower wages and less benefits, they are the ones that put the company in the state that its in. The Senators needs to receive lower wages and less benefits because they didn't run this country right. The problem with America is not the UAW but the people that has been running this country and allowing foreign country to practically own the United States.

Lets reflect back, the big 3 has been around for a long time and they were not receiving the wages they are today. The so-called middleclass worked very hard for rights to decent pay and benefits, so they can provide a decent life for their family and now you feel it should be taken away because foreign companies pays less to their workers than american auto companies. I say that in time those workers wages will go up as well regardless of the fact that they don't have unions. The bottom line is people work for a company for growth, advancement and opportunities and if the company prosper, then the people who actually does the work should prosper as well. Why should they work hard to make the company money and only management prosper?

Republicans has always been trying to eliminate middle class and without us, who would be paying all the taxes that gets paid, the RICH, I don't think so, they've been creating loopholes for the longest, that's why they are rich.

In addition, the Senators couldn't run the country well, so why should they want to run the automotive industry. And, why didn't they scrutinize the Financial Companies, like they are the auto industry? The financial companies created their problems, why aren't they making them give up all the money they made, which was way more than the auto industry CEO. Even though all of those CEO need to have their pay cut.

Our government was so busy creating trade with other countries and a lot of our business went over there and all it has created was problems because they don't have the regulations like we do in our country. We are getting a lot of recalls from the toys that came from China and the list goes on.

As the middle class disappears in the US, declining wages will be a reality that will challenge the new administration. Sen. DeMint of South Carolina is dedicated to protecting the Automotive Jobs in South Carolina. To save these jobs he has concluded that wages will need to freeze or lower, companies will have less liability for safety and health of workers and community and that taxes for companies will have to be lower. It is a strategy that has worked in both attracting and keeping jobs in South Carolina and is now the model for keeping jobs in the US.

The US will need low paying jobs as well as high paying jobs and Automotive Jobs are no longer middle class jobs but represent the new economy where hard work is not the determination of a workers value.

If a major league baseball player thinks he should earn more, he seeks other employment. The market is the determiner of who gats what and why. In the auto industry, if a transmission installer at Pontiac knows that he can move to an open job at Ford and make more, so be it ! This nation is too confused about this issue but the bottom line is that any auto worker is free to seek better pay as long as his work ethic warrants that degree of pay. Whether or not the man belongs to a union isn't relative at all. People are free to market their skills and in the very competitive auto industry, all employees should see that they can move and better themselves as long as someone is willing to pay them. On the other hand, if an employee is being paid too much, his employer should seek parity with the industry by adjusting his pay. By refusing to negitiate, the UAW is killing American auto makers and is probably causing more trouble than need be by their refusal to look at their contract until 2009. The industry knows what an hour of time is worth - let the industry peg salaries. Equal work will get equal pay. This will hold at Ford, GM, Toyota or anyplace else.
