How to Tell if Your Company Got Some TARP

January 23, 2009 RSS Feed Print

A lack of transparency in the use of government's TARP (Troubled Assets Relief Program) rescue money has rankled taxpayers. Good news then that Neil Barofsky at the Treasury Department is "preparing to ask every bank and company that's received a dollar from the $700 billion financial rescue to detail how the funds were used," the Washington Post reports. The banks and companies will get 30 days to comply and Barofsky can subpeona those who haven't been sufficiently open.

While awaiting the official TARP details, rankled taxpayers may find welcome comic relief in Anita Bruzzese's blog today-- "8 Signs Your Government May Have Received Bailout Money."

Here are a couple:

5. Company memo says that while the holiday party for employees was canceled because of costs, the executives will be traveling to Paris for a Valentine's Day getaway with significant others. The stress has been brutal on families, the memo notes, and the execs need some "snuggle bunny" time.

6. Cirque du Soleil has been hired to do the window washing. Management says the former washers "lacked synergy."

If only Bruzzese were way off track. The Wall Street Journal reports today that TARP-takers haven't slowed their lobbying in Washington: GM spent $3.3 million on lobbying in the fourth quarter--right about the time they got $13.4 billion in TARP funds to keep their business above water-- and Merrill Lynch also spent $1.2 million on lobbying over the last two quarters, according to the WSJ.

The media is doing their normal deal, reporting only what sells papers or gets people stirred up. Reading the US News or any of these "journals" is like watching a reality show. Only show what makes people want to watch more and think they are seeing something real. There were more than 4 big banks that rec'd TARP funds and not all those that got it wanted it. And it came with HUGE strings attached. Like government knows how to budget themselves???? Wake up people !! Do you watch entertainment tonight because of the teasers they throw out at the beginning of the show only to find they exaggerated the story and it was nothing. Pretty much what is going on with the TARP money and the press bashing banks for business as usual. I'm not saying I agree that some of the events are necessary but it's their business not the governments. Let's scrutize government spending a whole lot more. We found out a couple didn't accurately report their earnings and failed to pay taxes how many more do you think there are? Let's stop letting the press run our lives. Do you remember $4 a gallon gas do you think that started the recession...it has snowballed ever since then. People started cutting their spending, less spending less demand for products, less jobs, less jobs means people can't pay their bills, not the banks fault you bought a 900,000 home and couldn't afford it and now you lost your job or your housing market that was already over priced tanked. What did Obama say "everyone has to take some responsibilty"...man people get over yourselves and stop the bashing and stop listening to the news...they love to get your all worked up and it's working isn't it

The Republicans controlled all three branches of the US Government from 2001 - 2007 continued to control the Executive for the next two and continue to control the Federal judiciary and the USSC today. For the first six years Bush got everything he submitted to the Congress, save for the nomination of Harriet Meyers which was blocked by his fellow Republicans without even the courtesy of a hearing.

When it was a Republican Administration handing out the bailout money the Republicans in Congress were all for it. Now that a Democrat is President, they have suddenly decided that was a bad idea. What a surprise!

...are always more than willing to blame all of this economic garbage on the Democrats, let alone Obama who hasn't even been president for 7 full days.

Up until 2 years ago you freaks had total control of the government for 12 years. For the last 2 years you same freaks had obstructionists in the legislature that did nothing but stop the Democrats from passing legislation that would have prevented all this. Think I'm wrong? - go have a read at what your own conservobot think tank AEI and Trent Lott have to say about it: (http://www.aei.org/publications/filter.all,pubID.26506/pub_detail.asp)

Once again, being true to your ignorant roots, you chumps complain about the Dems not getting anything done when the whole time it was YOU standing in the way of progress. Yet you have the nerve to try and pin the blame on a president that hasn't even been in office for a full calendar week.

Like it or not it was a combination of the republiCAN'T party, president George W.(Warcrimes) Bush, your goofy "republican revolution" and even goofier "contract with America" that got us here. Not to mention that intellectually deficent, wanna-be cowboy you zeros disgraced this country with DOUBLED, in 8 short years no less, a national debt that took 220 years to run up before Bush took office.

Before you go railing against President Obama, as I recall we still have troops deployed. Wasn't it you brain dead conserva-lemmings that were having your temper tantrums chanting "you liberals hafta support da president cuz we're at war and ur unamarikan if'n ya dont - hyuk hyuk"...?

Guess what...? We're still at war. Enough said.

Proof positive that Republican hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Do the world a favor - quit whining because you lost the election, stick your thumb back in your mouth and in the words of Keith Olberman "shut the hell up".
