Target Layoffs Add to Toll

George Draper Dayton, founder of the original Dayton's in Minneapolis, is rolling in his grave. Target is now just another large corporation that does not care about it's employees. Don't listen to their propaganda. I worked at Corporate IT in the mid-1990's and it was fun... up & coming, fast growing company. Then they got "too big for their britches" when they became the #2 U.S. retailer. I got out because the work environment completely changed. I've never seen so many complete idiots called "managers" in my life. This was inevitable. So many companies are jumping in on the "sky is falling" mentality, using it as an excuse to cut payroll when they don't really need to. If things are so dire then they should have cut compensation to corporate officers Robert Ulrich, Gregg Steinhafel, Douglas Scovanner, and Michael Francis who were all in the Minnesota top 10 for CEO & non-CEO compensation in 2007 (public knowledge). Their pay, alone, could fund a small country.

I particularly love this paragraph from their own press release:

"As a result of these actions, the company expects to record a charge of approximately 3 cents per diluted share, the majority of which will occur in the company's 2008 fourth quarter. The company believes the annualized benefit resulting from these actions will exceed the charge".

What a joke!

Minnesotans, you should no longer feel any pride in shopping at your "hometown" Target. They're now just typical corporate America. The almighty dollar rules, not the well-being of their employees.

I love the sense of entitlement this generation has in the workforce. I, too, have worked for both Wal-Mart and Target, and there is no comparison. Target is better in most every way, especially as an employer. Face it- almost every kind of blue-collar job nowadays, people feel like sharks feeding off carcass remains to get anything close to ahead in this world, so they will be bitter when they actually have to put some effort into getting what they want. If you're not satisfied, there are other avenues to explore. They may not be any better, but they are different. Companies have been laying off people in better times than this, but this is not unusual with our current economic crisis. Give it time- the companies with better long-range planning will be around to reap the benefits, and I believe Target will be one of the best. Think positive!

This was the best company I worked for-treated with respect, rewarded for my efforts, the company invested more resources in training their employees than ay other company I worked for....I could go on and on. This news is sad....but retail is not doing so well right now, so these layoffs were expected.

I work at a target dc and we heard today that they are cutting jobs at the headquarters and also closing a dc in arkansas, we were also told to budget for 30 hours a week. ten hours cut a week.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

If you work and have a good attitude, Target, like any good company, treats you right and is fair. Sounds like you just don't want to work.

hope our dc stays at 40 hrs. with this economy its hard to make ends meet the way it is!

I as well must agree with the comment posted by "Target (above)", I have also been working for Target for almost two years, and the environment is probably the best that I have had the priviledge to be a part of. One can actually be proud of the work that one does and accomplishes. From what I have seen not even the Target mascott (bullseye) is treated like a dog, and he is actually a dog. Further more if one manages to get treated like a dog in Target, than unfortunally no future is hopeful for such a person.

actually, when i worked at walmart i was treated like a dog. i've been with target for almost two years, and its a great working environment. i am treated with respect and actually thanked and rewarded for working hard. i will be sad if the layoffs make it to my store.
