Target Layoffs Add to Toll

January 27, 2009 RSS Feed Print

On the heels of massive job cuts at several major corporations yesterday, Target said today it would be laying off employees at its corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, reports the Star-Tribune.

A Target spokeswoman would not offer details on the number of positions that would be eliminated. The company offered a statement. Here's an excerpt: "We believe the decisions we are making, though difficult, represent appropriate actions to manage our business and maintain our competitive advantage going forward."

Target says it will have more details later today after employees are informed. In the meantime, there are plenty of rumors on the web, including on this Twitter feed (apparently written by a TV anchor and radio host in Minneapolis).

At my store we were told we could demote or be laid off and take a severance package. I opted for the lay off, becasue my hours were being cut to about 20 a week. I can make more than that in unemployment while looking for a FAR better opportunity. Target has since told the unemployment agency that I quit for personal reasons. I am now having to fight my case, so I can recieve my benifits. Target is a corporation that does as little as possible to make themselves look good and fool the public, while covering up how they REALLY treat their employees. Target is known by their employees for mistreatment, horrible pay, and bad benifits (if you even qualify). You HAVE to be a full-time employee to maintain benifits, so by eliminating this full time position they are trying to save money so they can continue giving themselves big fat bonuses. Isn't a little funny how all this happened LITTERALLY the weekend before re-enrollment of the benifits package. How is it that they have gotten away with this mistreatment for so many years. Target employees need to start coming out and talking to the press. It is time that America knows the truth of their business practices. I have a ton of family and friends who are now boycotting Target for these business practices. Did you know that Target employees qualify for welfare? They do most everyone I know is on some form of it from those stores from food stamps to medicaid. It's really sad that these people who have worked hard everyday are having to struggle JUST to get by. The ETL's at my old store were even overheard one day saying that their employees should stop bellyaching about their pay. They belive that they make enough to pay bills and support their families, while they live in their extravegant houses and drive their nice overpriced cars. It is truly appauling what they do to people. Those stores litterally drain you of energy, its kind of like a black hole. Think about it though... if you worked in conditions like that, and had to look at that harsh red color ALL day long... how would you feel?
