Former Chicago Bears linebacker Jim Schwantz will be tackling a new role as mayor of Palatine, Ill., a northwest suburb of Chicago. Schwantz unseated longtime mayor Rita Mullins in last night's election and said his victory was "extremely humbling," reports the Chicago Sun Times.

The former pro athlete didn't jump directly into politics--he has been working as an executive at a moving company. During the election, Schwantz told a local paper that his name was helping him getting in the door, "but then it’s up to me and the platform I stand behind."

If Schwantz is looking for other NFL-to-politics role models, he's got former Republican VP candidate and nine-term congressman from New York Jack Kemp, as well as former Oklahoma congressman Steve Largent.

In the early 90's I worked for one of the biggest employers in Palatine. Rita was awesome to us. She did anything she could to help us and always was available for any event we had. I did move away from Palatine but still have property in Palatine. (rental prop)

The big push to get Rita out was she had been in there to long, what did you replace her with? Someone with NO experience. I find that scary in these hard times. Jim has floated on his NFL career way to much. I wish I could of voted but I live and vote somewhere else. Rita, at least was someone who has an understanding of the system and what needs to be done. Jim, has no idea and just like the company he works for, used his NFL time as his selling point.

I also feel bad that so few people voted out of the registered voters. Winning with less then 50% does say something. I want Jim to prove me wrong but I truly feel the only reason he was elected was that he played for Bears, which is his past, you need to look to the future, and Jim I am sorry to say is not it.

I'm glad to hear an honest to goodness down to earth guy like Jim's the new Mayor! From the Bears to the Cowboys to Von Sydow Moving. (yes, he works for the family of actor Max Von Sydow)
