Hey, I am in Texas, there is not that much of an abundance of jobs here either. :)

If you keep reporting this Texas will be on the receiving end of a massive migration from the lesser 49 states. We don't want or need that here.
Don't come to Texas you won't like it. We're all a bunch of dumb Rednecks here. It's too hot. We have bugs as big as a bus. The entire state smells like a cattle yard. Stay where you are.

So does agriculture. So also does the fact that the housing bubble never percolated in Texas to quite the mania that some other places saw. Hence less "bust".

Texas has a reasonable cost of living and tax burden for most. Property taxes are steep, which the local governments must watch as there are many in Austin who are being forced to move given the incredible increases we've seen. The other reason is that Texas has one of the best can-do, we're accountable workforces you'll see. The government does it's thing (which is generally non intrusive), business does it's thing, and people do our thing. It's about as far from the socialistic states of NY and CA that you can get.
So it's no surprise that we are doing better.
