The End of Unemployment Benefits: 5 Things to Know

I'm a full time student that is in reach of getting my associate degree in business. But unfortunately my benefits are coming to an end and I'm forced to give up my dream. The Department of Labor offers you the dream of going back to school and then takes it away. This is not right! I think if you are in school and passing you should continue to get benefits. The Department of Labor need to be more informative to people because all they are doing is handing out more broken dreams.

To Maria / Ca

I went through the same thing in NY. Went to DOL to apply for T599 ( 26 week extension for full time student who is trying to obtain training in a new field of industry. I worked in EXPORT and that industry is no where close to recovering) The DOL told me I had to make appt with Career Counseler. Career counseler told me there was a 6 month wait. 6 Months later I was told that the T599 had to be applied to withing 15 days of being laid off.

Now I am enrolled full time in school ( at night) on a Student Loan, with no t599 extension. If I Drop out I have to start paying back 10,000.00 loan. ha ha ha.. with no job .. I had hoped to get the last extension, which would have gotten be through the end of this semester but...

I missed the last extension for unemployment because I was laid off on April 15 2009,and the extension was only for those laid off prior to April 6 2009. If millions of people have not been able to get work in a year and 1/2 how am I expected to in 9 months.

So as it stands now, I will have no income in 1 week. I only hope that my home doesnt go into forclosure until after May - so that I can finish the semester and delay payback of student loan for 6 months.

Good luck to you.

I’m trying to go back to school with assistance from the EDD. Well I am not getting very far, all these programs that they have are unobtainable. I am almost running out of my last extension from my benefits, I have already done everything I was supposed to in terms of schooling except for enrolling bc I am waiting for the WIA to be approved (since 11/09, still waiting......) My school starts 2/22/10 EDD tells me that since I am close to the end of my benefits they will not grant me CTB (extended paid benefits while going full time to school) so basically the programs that are out there to help you gain a career are FALSE, I am now going to have to go to school with out any loan assistance or any help financially while attending. I have been looking for jobs while I have been off, I live in San Bernardino, CA there is no jobs out here and if there is they are fast food places, I would actually be making less money than being on unemployment. I want to go to school to be an LVN and from there work my way to RN where I know there will be job security for the rest of my life. I have never been on unemployment or any kind of public assistance, but I am determined to go to school and I guess I will have to seek public assistance now to support my family while I go to school; I am very stressed about this. These so called training benefits from EDD have let me down.

We must admit, this is so much the fault of the administration, and not the Obama administration. Look to the Bush administration and all the Senators and Congressman whom stoob by over the last 10 years while American Jobs continued to go overseas. Imagine all the Call Centers that are now in India, Canada etc. These were our (American) jobs. Our government just held their hands and collected our tax dollars, while the largeest corporations took American jobs overseas. The very corporations that we are currently bailed out with Trillions of Tax payers dollars, moved hundreds of thousands of jobs to foreign countries. They did it in the context of competing globally, yep we are competing globally now, not just to survive as a nation, but most of the nation is competing to eat, to keep our homes etc.

Have you called any of the major credit bureauss Equifax, Trans Union Experian. These companies control our credit reports ie they have our very existance in their hands. Yet all of them have moved their call centers and service centers overseas, mostly India. How did our government allow a US Corporation with such vital information as our DOB, SS#, Names, Address, Family history etc in the hands of a foreign country like India. I was outraged when I called to get a copy of my credit report and the phone was answered in India. To make it worse, this person had the nerve to be rude.

These were our jobs, now in China, India and other developing nations. China and India has the fastest growing middle class and wealthy in the world. China now has more millionnaires than the US. Again these were our Jobs that the big corporations we supported and were/are loyal to. HP, IBM, Compaq, Intel, many of the Pharmicutical companies, manufacturing companies have moved our jobs to foreign countires for Cheap labor. The US government had plenty of opporunities to stop this. They could have taxed them more for if products were manufactured oversea and imported into the US and sold. They could have changed the tariffs. We don't really export anything now we simply import everything . Products like clothing , shoers, household items are all manufactured by American companies that pay wages, no benefits to foreigners, yet they import these products and expect us to buy them, while they get rich on the margins and Americans go into deth and starvation.

The economics of all this has to eventually take a toll on Americans. Yes If you continue to manufacture products overseas taking the labor market overseas, who is this country will have a job to pay for the products.

My husband continues to apply for jobs all over the tri-state area where we live. He is a go getter and never stops moving. He has applied for jobs with so many companies through the on-line web sites, newspapers and just by going to the businesses in person to deliver his resume. Nothing, Nothing, Nothing!

What is going to happen to all of us that have no benefits coming in? I am disabled. We will lose our home. We are very scared.

I live in florida with am unemployment rate of almost 11% my unemployment is ending right after dec 31 in which I am disqualified from recieving anymore benefits. I enrolled in school and recently disinrolled because i was owing more with the loans that would put me even more behind. I have been focusing on finding work which is the hardest , i have been rejected in all the qualifing areas or just not even considered. I am very worried about loosing my home and not being able to put food on the table, I am so discouraged and dont know what to do, or where to look. I am desperate for an extension of some sort and soon, because my benefits will end jan6th which is only a portion of the % i usually recieve, help i am desperate. The president said he wanted mothers to go to school , but that is not a reality for me as now i have more bills and no degree as it costs more to go an i have no job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!What to do???

In the same boat. NY Unemployment since lay off in April. Waited 6 months for NYS training approval - only to note the courses offered wouldn't bring me a starting OR MAX salary I could live off. Single homeowner with no children, I am entitled to NO help from NYS assistance. Can't sell home- just had appraisal and I owe more. Like you- enrolled in 2 year school- 1st- Apply for a Pell Grant/ Tap grant- You won't get it until Fall 2010 but better than nothing, 2nd -take a Stafford Loan- they don't care if we're not working, becuase they assume we will be working in 2 years, 3rd - Look into T399 program w/unemployment for addition 26 weeks if approved( but I heard they discontinued). Now.. How do I live for 2 years while in school to get a job if I don't HAVE a job, and no unemployment.. Wrote to Senator Skellos- my reply was - " will reply" .. and I wait...

Good luck to the bunch of us!!

I feel the pain of everyone who has commented about their status of being unemployed and being afraid. I also have been unemployed for the last six months wnd my 26 weeks will be up soon. I've had to tap into my 401k to pay my bills. I am not sure how I will make it but I believe that I will. Not to mention that I am a single mom, just trying to barely make ends meet. I lost my job after working for the same company for 9 years. I have gone back to school in the hopes bettering myself on behalf of my child. I sincerely hope that everything changes for the better for everyone who is going through this really tough situation. I just pray that for the childrens' sake, America will come through.
