Many Employers May Rehire Workers They Laid Off

I've been laid off or even fired without notice or good cause more than once. In each case, I would never work for those companies who shall remain nameless ever again, even if they invited me back at higher pay. They know who they are. Once betrayed, I will never be loyal to any organization that betrays me. That is why I will never work again for any company that kicked me to the curb because of their internal politics or ruthless pursuit of ever higher profits at the expense of everyone else.

Even if they call me to go back I dont want to go back to my previous job. Deloitte Tax, I worked until 2:00am in the morning. I am better collecting unemployment checks while looking for a position in tax than stress myself to hell.

The practice I worked was very political with groups that hated each other and I was asked to take sides. It was a mess.

So when they let me go I was happy the nightmare was over.

That's terrible! Unfortunately, there are a lot of politics involved with pretty much any work field that involves competition for better positions. This may seem a bit conceded, but you need to find ways to get the word out to the higher ups of accomplishments you've made with the organization you work for. If you do a good job and your boss either doesn't want to bother with giving you a public pat on the back or claims all of your achievements as his/her own, then you are left at the mercy of hear say and gossip to decide your fate. At least, find a way to consistently document your achievements, so they can be provided when needed. You may need the documentation for defensive purposes as well as for promotional reasons and new job seeking.

Hey Confused, regarding your situation: You might want to consider talking to an attorney about your situation. When you go on FMLA your in a "protected class" and unless you abuse this priviledge an employer shouldn't be able to fire you. The term "at will" is an employers excuse to fire anyone, anytime, for any reason. This statement is at the end of most job applications. There are some attorneys out there that will offer a free consultation to discuss your case. Do yourself a favor though and write down everything that happened before you talk to the lawyer. Good luck to you

Hey "Whatever" If it's any consolation I was fired 1 day before my scheduled layoff. Excellent reviews, no previous write ups, great repoire with my co-workers. Hell, H.R. wasn't even sure what happened but they were "letting me go" You're 15 years on the job speaks volumes. Please take time to reflect on all of your accomplishments. Prospective employers are more interested in how long you were at your previous job and what you've done more so than whether or not you were laid off, or fired. There are so many "casualties of the recession" that it's really not gonna matter. Besides, if you think about it, it's GM's loss, you're loyalty proves this. Best of luck to you....

I know what you mean David, you know the black eye on your resume. MY employer let me go all because they took what my ex coworker said to be the true which I know it was a fabricated lie

who wanted to run me out of my job just because I was more likeable by the customers than her. My real boss then she is just a pushed over. I knew my ex coworker was gonna be trouble as soon as she came to work in the department. All the good things I did for the place e.g. bringing in more customers working extra minutes working with no breaks at times all that did not count for the corporate idiots who treted me like I was dumb just because I only have a bachelors degree and they all have a master degree. Not to mention that I sugested my ex boss to be promoted to be the director of the program. She was nothing more than a counselor but as soon as she became the director the little position went to her head.

Helping the place prosper earned me I being fired and now I have to deal with it because is in my job history.

Why are you not allowed to work for GM ever again? They must have offered you a good severance package and requested a waiver from you.

I just lost a position with Detroit Edioson, through a Joint venture with GM. As soon as GM filed for bankruptsy, Edison permanently laid off about 20 of the powerhouse mechanics and operators. I could have submitted my resume for another position, further away for 30% less money, but why bother. Michigan's troubles are just starting, this state is not going anywhere for a decade. With Imbicils like Kwame Kilpatric running it and the rest of the corrupted politicians Michigan is turning into a waste land.

The Weather Channel cut me after many years of experience. I don't think I'll get an invite back.

GM just cut me in it's latest white collar downsizing, and informed me that I would not be invited or allowed to ever work for them as a full time or contract employee again. As if anyone would want to. God Bless America. 15 years doen the drain and nowhere to go, along with GM as a huge black eye on my resume'.
