Why Michigan's Unemployment Rate Could Be Worse

Jeff of WI,

I think if you were to check the details, you would find that the democratic governor and legislature inherited the problems from the then republican governor and legislature. MI has been in a recession since the governor's first year on the job and thus 7 years and counting

At least Michigan residents know that they can't blame it on Republican reform. Democrats have ran the state of MI for how many years now? When was the last time there was a Republican mayor in Detroit? Oh that's right. At least we can all fall back on one excuse.

It's Bush's fault!

Doesn't look like we will be able to have a home anymore. I guess only the rich people can have homes, food and heat. I am disgusted... WE have been taken over by Government and Corporate America. Life, Liberty and the pursuit apparently only applies to those who have the money to pay for it. And we call this a civilized nation... right!

When will it be time for a war on our own territory? no more T.V., no more waiting for politicians or corporations or retraining or relocating or any form of false hope. When will that day come? I want to know if Americans have what it takes to stand up and take back their country from financial, pharmaceutical, etc. global companies and politicians who don't really care if America becomes like Brazil or Mexico. I can't imagine the mentality of the person who keeps listening to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh while America turns into a developing world nation with only a 5-10% middle class, 90% poor, etc.

Just remember what it took years ago with the Pinkertons and the first labor unions. It's not going to be any easier now. They will mow us down before they give up.

Implement the 13 Presidential Executive Orders in my book to create 29 million jobs, ensure prosperity for our children and America, and to guarantee that the events in 2008 never happen again.

When will the People "Wake Up and Smell the Coffee" The government is not addressing the employment problem because it doesn't know how to fix it.

Hard working Americans and recent High School and College graduates suffer while the financial companies are prospering thanks to the over $500 billion dollars of taxpayers’ moneys provided to them. The true National unemployment rate is over 12% ( 17.52 million people) and the underemployment is over 16% (23.36 million people). Who cares what you call him. Hes not addressing him in person and besides they are all crooked politicians that do not deserve special attention. This country is in a mess because of our leaders just remember that

I'm sure barack, jimmy, george, ronald--heck even gerald--they all will surivive if we call them by their first names. They arent the poor unemployed souls sitting in blogs wondering what to do. Ill do it when I see 'em in the afterlife...."Hey George! Hows it goin'?!?" Of course if I see him, I wont be in heaven but so be it...I'm sure I'll be employed.

Alfredo molfaunoconovich of MI 9:27AM September 30, 2009

Not arguing . . . but would be interesting to hear an assessment of "unreported employment." As a freelance web designer working with clients around the country, I'm getting a lot of business from people trying alternatives to the type of employment they no longer have. If people aren't employed that doesn't always mean that people aren't working. I do see some people trying new things, marketing their "second best" skill (i.e. unemployed accountant takes up landscaping, etc.). Not discounting the stress and real loss of a recession like this one, but also think there will be some during this time that find empowerment and new direction from forced change.

And for me -- I count us lucky to have President Obama -- as an antidote to the 30+ years of misguided leadership that brought us to this point. I just have doubts that the American populace is smart enough to follow him in the direction we need to go. About 1/3 of this country are lemmings that will willingly plunge off the cliff, marching there to chants and rants about "socialism" and "taxes" and "immigration" and "abortion" paid for by corporate interests who use bought-and-paid-for politicians and media members to churn up social resistance to anything that threatens their profits and power.

Ro of MI,

You call the president by his title and last name, not by his first name. I am fairly certain he is not a personal friend of yours, as a friend would show him the respect he deserves.

His name is President Barack Obama, and he is obviously more refined and intelligent than you.
