Unemployment Extension Clears Senate

Being unemployed for quite some time is starting to take its toll on my morale. I have a BS in Construction Management and a lot of experience in the field. The problem is my experience is in framing residential multi-family units and Single family housing. The only construction that is happening now is in Commercial or Roads. Funny how I can build 9 and 10 story buildings but the Hiring Managers don't think I can do a paved road or tenant fit outs. Give me a break!

Amen to Kate of NJ, my husband has been laid off, took retraining, is 60, laid off since late 2008, and has multiple interviews, and either his age or late payments on our credit history is screwing him. Those HR people should be fired. I think companies are full of idiots who are going to wreck this country's economy totally. There are tons of people losing their homes. Who is going to support them? ( I work two jobs, by the way, to get by, and we have four kids to support.) The government better pass a law against this discrimination, and soon. If there are jobs, why aren't people being hired? I know they're looking!

As if being unemployed isn't bad enough, now I'm hearing (and experiencing)the myths and stereotypes that go along with being unemployed for an extended period of time. If you have been without work for over 6 months many of these HR people and hiring managers figure you must have been fired for poor performance or are 'unemployable' for whatever reason. Add to that the age discrimination issue which is alive and well - experience vs. youth - youth wins because they can pay a lesser salary - and you have a very discriminatory situation that nobody wants to bother correcting. Somebody in our esteemed government has got to establish new and improved hiring guidelines and sit these HR managers down and have a chat regarding their hiring practices. They are not fooling anybody.

I live on my computer daily filling out applications and still no calls. They say the economy is getting better but for who? I have exhausted my unemployment with no place to turn. What now?

I am 56 years old and enemployed from August 2008. I have been on interview, sent out resumes and still no reply. I have a heel spur from pounding the paves for jobs. At nights my daughter have to wake me because I am screaming and crying in my sleep. I do not know what to go back to school to study. Everyone says nursing, but there are so many young people in that field, do you think hospitals will employ me at that age when I complete. The future looks bleek for many of us in our late fifties and sixties. I am not giving up. God will make a way for all of us. Let us hold onto God's unchanging hand. Chery of GA do not give up. Even if you have to live in a shelter as many people do right now in NYC, God will make a way. Keep the faith.

I have been unemployed since 2008; lost my home; had to stay with my sister-in-law; she lost her home so I had to find somewhere else to go; couldn't stay with family because my daughter and her husband made it very uncomfortable for me to stay there; ended up staying with a friend 30 miles away from everything and it's been a year with him; he's getting ready to move so I don't have anywhere to go; all tiers of my unemployment stopped in February and there is no 5th tier; my best friend just committed suicide 2 weeks ago. All I hear is stay positive..I really try very hard to do just that and I pray but I think my prayers only go to the ceiling...On top of all of that I'm 60 years old and credit shot to h..l...is there any hope at all?

Wow from all the comments If you don't put your trust in Jesus Christ you could stress out to the max. With man it's impossible with Jesus all things are possible. A lot of writers have ask for mercy to the writers instead of making their request known unto the Lord and having faith enough to believe God will take care and be on time with the answer or solution. I have been unemployed since, December 2008 I have a retirement and pension from a well know Corporation but I'm the knew unemployed the years but not the age to draw unemployment or retirement. I thank God for the unemployment and the tiers I have worked 20+ years and have always found myself working this is the longest I have been without a job my credit is shot from all the lay-offs and jobs just closing their doors without warning or jobs being eliminated. I have been blessed to keep water running and food on the table and children lunch money and moral up in the house my husband is also on lay-off that is why I know its God who is making a way out of no way.
