There's no doubt that Americans are going to use the checks they're getting in the mail as part of President Bush's economic stimulus package. They're just not going to do it in the way the White House wants. A poll from Creditcards.com suggests that instead of spending the money on consumer goods to give an immediate jolt to the economy, half of Americans are going to either save the rebate or use it to pay off their debt. The survey of 1,004 people over the age of 18 found that the youngest age group (18-34) were the least likely to splurge instead of save—just 8 percent were going to cash the check and head right to the mall.
