Export managers, trade intermediaries, import export consultants are desperately needed. Only 1% of American manufacturers export (Dept. of Commerce) and of those that do, 70% have 20 or fewer employees. What will make a successful export manager or international trade professional? Learning the business inside and out. Many business and professional schools offer certificates and some offer business models for those who want their own enterprise. Always remember that the small business owner is placing the international future of their business in your hands, and you better know what you are doing. Learn everything that you can so that you can provide competent services. I have been teaching international trade and providing consulting services at the Import Export Institute in the Tampa, FL area and if you have questions, call us!

I just started my own EMC and I am dealing with two product lines at the moment -two very different lines. High end exotic skin accessories and natural health products. I have a buyer for the health products -not a big one- but a buyer nonetheless. For the accessories in exotic skins is a different story, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to find buyers for these kinds of items?

Matthew ~ really great article! Very informative. We're doing a series over at the OPEN blog by American Express on exporting. Perhaps your readers might find it beneficial:

Also, at some point and with the permission of authors, Google will be offering all out of print books online for complimentary viewing and that will include mine which I can't wait because it covers everything you want to know about starting and running a profitable exporting business:

http://tinyurl.com/6j85ur

It provides every little secret to exporting success (including some of Reinke's)!

Lastly, another good resoucce for folks interested in exporting as a business or as a top executie job is IOMA (www.ioma.com) or more specifically, Global Sourcing, Exports/Imports which can be found here:

http://www.ioma.com/export_import/

The "Managing Imports and Exports" is an excellent newsletter (expensive but worth it for serious exporters) and covers, from time to time, what Export Managers make at all different sized companies.

Happy exporting,
