Florida should not even be on the list. EVERY business needs a license, and they actually arrest you if you run even the smallest business without one. There are no small car repair facilities allowed out of your garage. The regs and licensing to open one, under the guise of protecting the consumer, are insurmountable. Businesses in Florida are only for the rich and well connected. You need a license to walk around your neighborhood and cut lawns!

Depends where you are in FL. South FL = melting pot and very rude people. North FL is actually the, "south" and has a hint of southern hospitality. Much better than SoFla.

What about North Carolina? Anyone with opinions? Not even mentioned on the list.

Have to agree with Michelle here: Florida has the rudest people in America--all the flotsam that's floated down from NY and NJ--and a business air of criminality. Start your business somewhere else.

FL is the most dishonest place to work and or to have your own business. People spend more time trying to screw each other over financially than they do anything else. I would never start a business in FL it's to risky. Besides the people here are not nice they are the rudest, most hateful people anywhere and they treat each other like garbage on teh personal side and the business side. No one here is to be trusted! Whoever wrote this has clearly never been here to do business or to live.

And taxes or no taxes FL is very expensive to live in.

I agree with you Eric, the main reason so many people seek self-employment in Florida is because of the lack of quality jobs. I am an independent recruiter and I constantly communicate with people attempting to move away from Florida because of the low pay and lack of quality opportunities. I've had the opportunity to contract with many different firms throughout Florida and have rejected many offers because of the open discrimnatory acts that violate Title VII regulations, and nothing done to stop it. I work with organizations all around the country and Canada and Florida, in my opinion, is the worst when it comes to discriminating when considering applicants. Florida will always be a state that pays lower wages because of the large number of immigrants that flood the state and are willing to work for very little to have an income. I just placed a candidate in an operations management position in Florida with a salary of only 45k per year. This same position in almost every other state pays between 70k and 90k per year. While lower wages may be attractive for employers, it keeps quality candidates from considering the state. I use to live in Florida, I moved away not because of the job market, but because that state has the worst drivers I've ever seen.

I agree

The one reason so many people start a business here in Fl is simple no jobs. The pay is bad . A theacher in most states 55K average Fl 35K. If you start a ice cream shop you buy a freezer for 10K a mixer 2Ketc.. you pay sales tax right up front plus a license from state ,county and city are needed just to say the word business they all have there hands out! l can go on and on I live here I was born here all my family is here or I would leave yesterday. In Orlando we do not support arts of any kind or education (we rank 48th) or any important things it takes to attract smart people and large employers.

Thanks, Eric

Florida is a good place to start as is Texas. I actually started one in both. I have lived in a dozen states. California has many more start ups than any of the states listed above but much fewer successful ones. Texas has much fewer start up but MANY more successful ones. Doesn't that tell us all something?

Mateo Sumeo of CA 8:54PM April 05, 2011

You really like to move around ! that all .

accept it...
