Although it may be easy to open a business and maintaining it. Business owners suffer from two things in the marketplace. A heavy burden of taxes and licensing fees and a dwindling pool of customers liquidity for goods and services. For New York, since we have high income taxes, high sales taxes they basically push people out of New York State, remarkably so unemployment and welfare Pays you very well.

I have been running a business in west MI for 14 years and 2010 is the worst I have seen, this state has almost put us out of work! Im moving soon

WA state taxes business on GROSS revenue. The IRS doesn't even do that.

Not to mention the L&I costs. I can see why Boeing is moving.

Stay OUT of Illinois if you want to start a business. VERY "stick-in-the-mud

thinking, exorbitant taxes, a political climate that does NOT support business, an environment VERY unacceptable of outsiders (that is: if you're not in their old clique, they won't let you in).

Of course, if you are connected with the political cronies, your business will do well.

I started a business in Chicago 16 years ago, and the only--ONLY--reason it has survived is because I have sought out clients in other states and other countries. I have tried innumerable times to network, join community groups, be active in my community, but the old guard wants to stick with their cronies. If I could sell my house, I'd move out of this hell hole.

Illinois stinks for business. Manufacturing has been decimated in the last 9 years. Taxes & fee's have skyrocketed. Sales tax is 10.5% in the schitty of Schitcago. IL might be good for some kinds of business, but it is NOT manufacturing friendly by any sense of imagination.

Way too many taxes in this state for a small business to survive.

I have conducting business here for the past 15 years. I have lived here 20+ years. You don't know what U R talking about. Nonsense! I want to move...somewhere.

Dealing with state government is such in pain. Ask how business owners deal with DFI in Olympia? B&O? Licensing Deparment. Try to make a visit/ contact Department Of Commerce in Seattle about exporting , gally. You will be very disappointed. I only see WA has a big plus that is logistics if you are in exporting/importing goods---everythingelse is "big NO." You should make a few phone calls to department of licesing, DFI, Department of Commerce, SBA office, etc... before you are grading this state.
