7 Ways You Will Save Money with Windows 7

They are used to the Windows way.. and they will continue going in this direction. Now, OSX is a great OS but the apple hardware is just over priced.. and Apple does not seem to care, they just want to hold on to the niche market and earn big bucks from those who can afford it. Linux on the other hand, has made a lot of improvements but the story goes on.. it does not have the software base.. yes it is probably more stable than Windows... but not Newbie friendly enough (commandline? please!).You can call the general public dumb and they are still going to use Windows. If Windows 7 is what it promised to be, then Microsoft will stay mainstream for the years to come. I like to see an alternative but its just not happening, yet!

Old Man Dotes has a point, as does Philip Fry. After 32 years in software and technology development across many platforms, I have to say that some folks seem been convinced that MS is the definition of the computing world.

Early on, Microsoft captured an overwhelming market share because of smart positioning. They have been pretty successful in maintaining their grip on computing culture.

To be fair, they've gotten a lot of software to work together, in general, and there are many good ideas to be found in their various products. Also, the problem space they've adopted - including broad back-n-forward compatibility and product ubiquity - is very complex.

That having been said, however, they spend staggering amounts of money for disappoingly flawed results, and focus on finding new ways to capture market dollars before they've matured their last attempt. All the Windows OS versions and virtually all products are overly complex and very poorly documented. The Windows development world is highly inbred, and spends a major farction of its resources on finding answers to intrinsic or historical Windows problems, rather than seeking good computing solutions.

If you find yourself sounding like Master1, above, you're not thinking about what's good for computing and society at large- you're a Microsoft apologist.

Do Linux or other shareware Unix offspring have the investment base and marketing budgets that Windows has? Nope. Do they have the samed installed base? Nope. Are they perfect? Nope.

Are they nonetheless simpler, more reliable, more efficient and generally less buggy? Yep, but they don't have the money to build in the aftermarket products needed to capture share of installed base.

Don't kid yourself, agressive marketing efforts can overwhelm product superiority. MS will continue to do anything it sees as necessary in order to maintain its chokehold on computing. I think that only a heroically capitalized, strategically oriented competitive effort with a similar goal could make a real dent (this has not really been Apple's focus - they've targeted a niche, not market share, and concentrate too much on coolness for my taste). I wish Apple - or somebody - would address the general need for low-cost, simple personal computing.

Since such an effort seems unlikely to materialize, I can only hope that MS will do better with Windows 7 than with past versions. If this has occurred, it will have more to do with evolutionary progress than improvement in product philosophyor development process approach; it's not likely they've become less inbred or more dedicated to quality products.
