Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the field of emergency planning has grown, and with another major terrorist attack, which most experts consider inevitable at some point, that growth would doubtless accelerate. Of course, emergency planners prepare for and respond to other disasters, such as fires, floods, tornadoes, or earthquakes, outbreaks of highly infectious diseases, and major accidents. The field has formalized, with 250 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in place or in the works. Insiders report that jobs at the Federal Emergency Management Agency are tight, so the current way into a public-sector job is usually through a local agency. Large organizations such as corporations and universities also hire emergency planning managers.
