As a career coach for young adults, I always recommend they "keep it clean" on all social sites. Sharp (and some not so sharp) recruiters know where to find information on a prospective employee. These days, it's done on conjunction with a credit check.
Social sites are great for asking for specific questions, ie, does anyone know someone in journalisim in New Orleans? but there is still no replacement for the face to face contact

Although I can appreciate this concept, no matter how you slice it, the corporate world, in general, is still a very conservative bubble in most parts of the country; and I can understand why many young people may not want those in their corporate networking circle to look into their personal 'selves' as they present who they are on Facebook.
Just like nobody wants to divulge to their colleagues what they did with their husband/wife in the bedroom last night... Friendships and personal likes and tastes can have the same private "nothing to do with work" reality as intimate moments with your mate.
I once read an article where and HR manager admitted passing over a candidate for a job because on his MySpace, he said he spends his free time watching reality tv. So what? That's his business. Maybe this person also reads trade publications in his field of work but has no need to share this with friends. Would a person who went to a Marilyn Manson concert over the weekend, instead of a golf outing be an inferior accountant? Some accounting firms would think so.
I'm sure in 20 or so years from now when the last of the baby boomers have retired, there will be more of a general understanding that smart, savy people sometimes lead colorful personal lives that have no bearing on their professional identities, but unfortunately we are not quite there yet. People have the right to be express their genuine selves in social media and keep this separate from their professional life. That's why I recommend only using LinkedIn for professional networking and keep your MySpace and Facebook locked from those not designated as friends, and use a nickname rather than your own.
