I fancy research pharmacy wondering though if it is easy to find a job? Where would you work? Also is working in a dispensary a good idea for a bit of work experience? Would that be at all looked at when applying for university? Thanks!

I first decided that I wanted to be a Pharmacist when I found out that they make 10,000 a month. I was like "YEAH!!! Thats for me. Plus I'm super smart when it comes to science and math (even though I'm sometimes bored with it). But before making that 6yr commitment I decided to become a Pharmacy Technician first, to get an idea of what I would be doing everyday. During my externship as a pharmacy technician is when I decided that "teching" was not for me. I rotated in outpatient pharmacy for two months. Honestly it was like working in fast food. I would read the prescription, count out the pills, bottle the pills, label the bottle, bag the bottle...I did this over and over again for 8 hrs straight every day. IT WAS THE MOST BORING JOB EVER!!! My best days were when I had to do compounding:) That was fun. But those kind of prescriptions rarley came in. The craziest thing was that Pharmacists were doing the same job that I was doing but for more pay...obviously.
Basically, after my externship I went and took the exam and now I am a registered and board certified Pharmacy Technician. But I refuse to work in a pharmacy because it is way to repetative...no excitement at all...just bright lights and pill dust.LOL. I actually thought about going back to school to become a Registered Dietician (RD). I LOVE the work they do...its so rewarding. And if everyone was to follow the advice of a RD, less people on medication in the first place.
BUT, the only thing is that RD's only make 40,000-60,000 a year. On the other hand I could go back to school to become a Pharmacist and make 80,000-120,000 a year. It's a hard decision because even though I would Love to be a Dietician they don't make much...and even though I find a Pharmacist job to be outright repetative, they make a lot of money. I am raising two of my younger siblings and I want to put them through college when they graduate high school which is about 9-10 yrs from now. Plus, I was poor growing up and I want a better life for all of us. I also want to make enough money so that I can give back to my community. But I also want to be happy and fullfilled in my career. What is a girl to do????

If you are considering pharmacy as a profession, be very cautious. The supply of pharmacists has greatly increased in the last 5 to 7 yrs. due to the many new pharmacy schools that have been started. Job avalability is a supply demand proposition.Too many pharmacist results in fewer jobs and lower salaries. I know several new grads that had a very hard time finding jobs after graduation in 2010. The same is going to be true for 2011 grads. Pharmacists have been warning that this would happen as far back as 5 yrs. ago. They were right!

I agree that many people forget the wealth of pharmacy jobs that are located within a hospital setting. I live in California and have made a career at Scripps. If you live in this part of the country or are considering relocating out this way, check out http://www.jobsatscripps.com/

Great article about the career field of pharmacists especially since I think many people overlook that fact that hospitals do have pharmacy staff. If you are looking for healthcare jobs, including those as a pharmacist, you should consider http://www.jobsatnovant.org/ I've had much success finding a job with them.
