Best-Kept-Secret Career: Accent-Reduction Specialist

December 11, 2008 RSS Feed Print

Snapshot: A customer-service person in India speaks perfect English but wants his accent more clearly understood by Americans. A Chinese scientist at a government lab speaks poor English and in such a heavy accent that it's hard to understand him. A corporation has executives with thick Brooklyn, African-American, Latino, or southern accents, and the company believes they'll be more credible if they sound more like a TV news anchor. These are typically the clients of accent-reduction specialists, also known as accent neutralization or accent modification specialists. Demand for this specialty is strong. Most accent-reduction specialists come from the ranks of speech therapists or English-as-a-Second-Language teachers.

Getting there: Typical qualifications: a master's or Ph.D. in speech-language pathology, a license in speech-language pathology in your state, or a specialty credential in accent reduction or ESL training.

DC American Cultural Immersion, in DC has a 6 week program that really helped me improve any flaws I had with my accent. I swear, I sounded like my teacher. It is all about practice and the quality of the teaching. The way they taught me was so helpful, my teacher taught in a very different but fun and hands-on manner. It was like non of the teachers I had tested before. She was able to improve several words within the course of 15-20 minutes. Within a week I was much more confident in daily conversations, I landed a job at a company, that turned me down several times before. My teacher was focused on meeting goals and making sure there was progress. The best part about this program, was they allowed me to send voice recordings to my teacher as "homework" and she would correct them. So I knew I was studying the right way. I was in a 6 week program and it worked. They let you call other people that took the program and speak to them about it. If your in DC or don't mind learning by video you should go to them and sign up for one of their packages. It was well worth it.
