How to Turn Social Networking Into a Job Offer

I am the co-founder of a start-up, Quartzy (https://www.quartzy.com) tacking the problem from a different angle.

Basically Quartzy is a network of scientists AND the things that they love: chemicals, reagents, protocols, and facilities!:) Think of it as a three-way network.

Scientists upload their inventories and network them with their lab-mates to create a lab inventory on the fly. They can now share chemicals, comments for the chemicals that they use, place orders with their lab manager, see who has ordered what in the past and more!

The software is all online so there is nothing to install. Quartzy has been up for more than a year and has thousands of scientists logging to manage their inventories, schedule appointments on shared facilities and more.

Bla bla bla in my opinion. I want to hear about specific companies, salaries offered and see examples of the type of resumes or emails submitted to acquire the position. Sounds like more generic employment advice that people are giving out.I find employment advice to be useless because 1)giving advice is how the ones doing it are making a living and 2)they can rarely cite exact examples of how their advice has actually worked for someone. Even a physician can give you an idea of how an Rx will work and what side effects to expect. I genuinely feel that most people don't have a genuine clue of how the labor force works and how to actually acquire gainful employment if you are qualified.

I discovered LinkedIn 3 or 4 years ago. Learned how to get the most of it and now give workshops in Argentina to people, hunters and companies to take advantage of the tool. It's wonderfull how quickly people understand the way it works and focus on sharing and giving to the net.

Networking skills are competencies that make the difference between people, like leadership or teambuilding as examples.

No doubt social networks on internet are the "place". But they don't replace our human links between people and visual contact, they are tools that make our networking easier. That's all.

You are right social networking used to be a teen trend and a way of keeping in touch with family and friends, tracking down high school friends (like an online reunion) etc, but it is so much more than that now. It's not only a great way to market yourself and find the next big job, but if you have a business it's a way to market your business and learn a lot about your potential clients and at the same time let them learn about you too.

I always knew getting a job was not only to do with skills and qualifications, but who you know. Before, that meant who you know in person, but thanks to social networking it's about who you know period (and the people they know etc). It doesn't replace other methods but it sure enhances it.
