I resigned my job at age 50 in 2004 in order to stay home and provide personal health care for my spouse, dying of cancer. After her passing in 2006 I started looking for work. After applying for nearly 500 positions, I have yet to get even an interview. I'm always over qualified with two masters degrees and 24 years of experience in my field, public eduction. Have been turned down for interviews for lower paying jobs in other industries for the same reason. After paying the $175,000 in hospital costs I owed (after the health insurance picked up $1,000,000) I am much poorer and frustrated. I put in 24 successful and fulfilling years as a teacher and school administrator and now find myself unable to go back to work doing anything---at age 53. If I had to do it over again I would resign, without question, and care for my wife. Family always comes first. But what do I do now at age 53? Im not even close to retirement age. I wasn't planning to retire unless I couldn't work because of poor health. I enjoy working and having purpose in life.

You are so right there, Barb. Same thing has just happened to me. My job was "eliminated" during contract re-negotiations, and I know that what I did had to have been absorbed somewhere within the remaining workers because it was a huge job. I had been there 3 years, and was completely blindsided. I just feel sorry for the others who are still there and now are struggling with more work, because I know they are not being paid any higher. But daily we would see on our email at work that the company had just signed a 10 million dollar contract here, a billion dollar contract there....it truly makes me sick, the greed. What it boils down too is that no one in that company really matters, we were all just a number. I am through working for companies that just dont think of their employees as PEOPLE! I want to spend the next working years doing something to help other people and have the satisfaction that the company cares about me, and that I am doing good for others too.

I feel the pain of the unemployment budget also. Dont give in to the hate.

So I have been on Unemployment for the past 6 months now and have been forced to sell almost everything I have. I am so tired of seeing adds in the daily paper or Michigan Works that state you must have experience in this field. And the State providing you with money to go to College, yea right they are broke. With unemployment being at its highest why aren't employers willing to accept trainees. They train you on the job anyways! I have worked so many temp jobs now that I have given up hope!!

It is a shame that so many devoted workers have been replaced to "supposedly" save the company a few dollars. The work load is usually dispersed to someone else who is already wearing several hats. I, too, had been a very devoted employee, "take one for the team" player and loved my responsibilties only to be let go after 10 years. It was mostly because I had earned 5 weeks paid vacation time and had full health benefits, which I might add rarely used due to having good health - thank GOD. A young person was hired at a lower salary and no benefits for 90 days. Well, from what my co-workers told me, that young person had no people skills and no work ethics. Came in late often and used copmany time for the phone and internet. As a result of my demise, I have lost my home, benefits and forced to live in an undesirable environment. I've recently had to file bankruptcy and have stuggled to hold my head up. It's true the top execs still get their perks and benefits. There is no loyalty by the businesses anymore. Thanks corporate America for dumping on the workers and rewarding the guys in the high towers. Stop and realize it could be you one day. Any smart business would "forecast" down turns and be prepared for them when budget planning. You can't expect to always make more and more and more without making less at times. Greed is all it amounts to.
