Healthcare is not quite as recession-proof as people thinnk. Millions of people unemployed, means millions of people PLUS thier families uninsured. People don't go to the doctor unless its a life or death emergency. Nurses have the best chance...but consider the reality of the working conditions...HORRIFIC! Nurses get brow-beaten by patients, the patients family, arrogant doctors & control freak administration. They work 16 hr shifts, graveyard, weekends, holidays & change thier schedule at a moments notice to accomodate dept needs.

With that being said, don't think for a second, that such flexibility is reciprocated. No good deed goes unpunished. Acareer in healthcare puts food on the table, but I wouldn't exactly call it rewarding...or fulfilling....don't get me wrong, there are rewarding MOMENTS, but that's about it.

Did CALIGIRL (12-28-11) actually make a racist comment toward Asians and a disparaging comment from people with vocational education?! I believe she did. Point in fact, CALIGIRL said "...you'll actually have to be better than the competition from Asia. Then, there will be need for people who have little to no education to fill the menial jobs such as food servers, plumbers, cleaning staff...etc." Notwithstanding the racist comment and stereotypical profiling of people from Asia, it seems that CALIGIRL is implicitly being racist toward anyone not from Asia...as if anyone else couldn't present competition. Perhaps she's talking about those plumbers she disparaged. After all, according to CALIGIRL, they're just gonna have to accept the "MENIAL JOBS" because they "HAVE LITTLE TO NO EDUCATION".

What kind of person are you CALIGIRL? I've got a few descriptors in mind but I'm a polite person.

Thank you for recognizing that school psychology is at the cross roads of education and health care. As a certified school psychologist I am legally and ethically educated, trained, experienced and qualified to diagnose such issues as depression or ADHD. HOWEVER, the ignorance in the educational community regarding the diagnosis of such issues knows no limits. Second only to their ignorance, administrators in the educational system seem to need to control due to concern of money. I've heard many say they don't want their psychologists diagnosing certain issues because it could make the district financially liable and it would only come out of their budget.

The jobs are going to be at the extreme ends of the education and pay scales. There will be need for people with advanced degrees in science and engineering, and MDs, specialized RNs (nurse practitioners, nurse anesthesiologists...). Having a degree won't be enough, you'll actually have to be better than the competition from Asia. Then, there will be need for people who have little to no education to fill the menial jobs such as food servers, plumbers, cleaning staff...etc. There will be virtually nothing in the middle due to all the outsourcing and automation. So unless you're the person designing the machines, or your job is so menial it's not worth building a robot, you will be out of luck.

I have been in Diagnostic Imaging since 2002 I would not advise anyone to pursue a career in X Ray or any imaging modality right now. The market is saturated with techs. The amount of schools offering programs in Radiologic Technology has skyrocketed over the last 10 yrs. There are more graduates than jobs available, a trend that will likely continue for many years. A degree in Radiology Technology, Nuclear Medicine, or Ultrasound will leave you disappointed, unemployed, and broke. If you still want to take a chance and pursue a career in Radiology Imaging have a back up plan, because when you graduate there are going to be 1000s of techs fighting for the very few jobs available.

Hotel sales and catering is fun and pays well. You sell blocks of guest rooms, meeting space, banquet space, and services and amenities to meeting planners and travel planners. I started at around 45K or so plus bonus and moved up with Hilton to close 100K plus bonus.

Start entry level at ahla.com or aprinda.com

The great thing about hotel sales and catering is that everyone wants you after you have experience under your belt. I had 3 hotels offering me interviews and better salaries after just one year on the job.
