Why You Should Ditch the Quest for the Perfect Career

As a testament to the interviewees said, I have had this window open for a week and have only now been able to read the article. I am stretched while working part-time for a nonprofit, raising a toddler, and volunteering. I cannot imagine working a high-powered job while raising a family.

I wish women had some more appropriate role models; I also wish men who stay at home were accepted into the fold more often. I think you need to decide what is most important to you and focus on that. Many women in my neighborhood have held very high government positions and they waited for a family, choosing to adopt. I could not do that. I loved traveling with my mom when I was in my 20s. I did not want to be breathing through a machine when my son is 30. That's my decision. Others choose differently.

I would like to look back on my life and know I have touched others, and feel proud of what I have accomplished. I try to remember this when I make or look back on decisions (like choosing to stay home with my son). The path may not be easy, but at least I will feel it is rewarding.

Thank you for highlighting a reasonable exploration of women's roles!

There's no such thing as a "perfect" anything-- The idea is to find out what fascinates and energizes you, and try to find as much of that in a career as possible. Then balance that with the other areas of your life.
