Job Market Sucks? Not for Techies

This is so true - I know that recruiters for programmers can get $20,000 just for placing a programmer because the demand is so high. Job boards work as well.

Here's a good job board for programmers/software engineers:

I am in Florida, there is my bias. The Atlanta metro area may be the 'best chance' place in GA. This area had a dangerous water shortage just a few years ago. I do not know if this has been / can be 'solved'. The water and other things add up to me not wanting to live there. I like Savannah, GA (overall - not sure about tech jobs). Savannah has the port, manufacturing, tourism. Gulfstream (jets) based there.

In Florida, it seems that Orlando IT is needed in science and engineering companies; and Tampa IT is more business operations (financial services, etc). Orlando has water problems also.

Unemployment rates: US 9.2, Florida 10.6, Orlando 10.4, Tampa (Bay Area) 11.1; Georgia 9.9, Atlanta 10.5, Savannah 9.5.

I wanted to know did you have any information about techies employment in southern states like Georgia or Florida?

The DC Tech group on Facebook isn't the only place where people are looking for great people in the Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD markets. There is a similar group called Baltimore Tech and quite a few hot spots for jobs at startups and software companies, including DCTechEvents.com which is the hub for web and software events in DC, BaltimoreTechEvents.com which is the hub for web and software events in Baltimore), SocialMatchbox.com which is the hub for startups in the Washington, DC and Baltimore software startup communities. Refresh DC, a group for front-end web developers and web designers is also a really popular destination. The area has lots of companies hiring like crazy - from gaming companies to consumer facing web companies to business focused software as a service providers.

It is worth pointing out that the people who work for startups do not use mainstream sites like Dice and eFinancialCareers (owned by the same people as Dice) because they fear getting on recruiters' call lists - there are a lot of recruiters who simply don't get it. They prefer to hear about jobs from their friends, peers, and trusted local job lists like Craigslist and SocialMatchbox.com and developer meetup groups.

Places like Austin, TX, Boulder, CO, Portland, ME, San Francisco, CA, and Seattle, WA are also home to some great events, companies, and people. DC is definitely the place to watch in 2011, right along with SF and Seattle.
