I don't think that salons are hit very hard during recessions. People still need their hair cut. Most women won't cut the salon expense out of their budget. I highly doubt that Ylisa Seymour skips her straightening appointments during tough times. As a woman, she should know this. Spas may see less business, but I wouldn't think salons so much. By the way, Ylisa Seymour got her start by going to work for her mother, a financial advisor who was already well established and owns the building where they have their offices. She's the last person I'd take advice from, and definitely that last person I'd let manage my money. She should focus on managing the funds that she is currently responsible for rather than trying to find new money to lose. I hear her clients are down more than 50-60%. You know a financial advisor is good when they minimize your losses in times like these.

Dear Expert,

I am in the process of starting a small business--an LLC. Can you tell me the list of documents needed to start?

I only plan on hiring consultants, do I need an EIN or a TIN?

I am a mom and pop retail store, whose personal credit was damaged by this sad economy, we are still in business by a threat. There's all this talk about the small business administration helping us if you meet the credit requirements, the funny thing is when we did meet those requirements before the recession we were denied, and now in light of things if we were to apply again, we do not meet those requirements so the american dream in reality is how to struggle and dream of ways of starting over.

Dear Sir/Ma'am,

I was hoping you could put me in the right direction. I have a simple patented product that requires very minimal cost in materials but the equipment to manufacture it, is costly. What is my first step...a business plan?...getting a registered corporate license/name? My personal credit is below average. Is there such a thing as receiving a corporate "clean slate" credit/loan? If not, are there any "safe" companies willing to provide the cost of a business plan in addition to marketing, packaging, etc. for a "reasonable" percentage of the profit? Thank you, Randy

If small businesses fail at 50% the first five years, why are FRANCHISED small retail businesses sold with 10 and 15 year terms of the franchise agreement and the leases?

Isn't this pure malice in terms of the FIRST owner of the franchise. While, understandably, the franchisor gets to CHURN the failed franchisee often and continues to collect royalties on the business, and, therefore, does somewhat beat the odds of small business failure, isn't this an exploitive abd abusive practice in the sale of franchises? Franchisees sign personal guarantees on the long-term leases and the franchises that ensures that they will GIVE their businesses away when they fail to acheive breakeven status after exhausting startup costs and funds.
