How to Avoid the Marriage Tax

Ok, so this article wasn't what the title would lead you to believe it was. This perhaps was a better example of making better choices for those we vote into the law-making body of our government. Also, there are thin lines between tax deductions, tax avoidance and tax evasion.

The article suggests that you can lower your taxes by having more with-held from your paychecks throughout the year. Is the author really that dumb?

I remember a woman, a pathologist's wife, who once said "We don't pay taxes, We get a refund every year." Her husband made about $250,000/year and handled all the finances.

I think the U.S. congress likes people like that.

And people wonder why I refuse to get married. We have two kids and with the high cost of housing and daycare, are just barely saving for the kids education. A higher tax bill would take away from their college funds. So, our answer? Who needs a peice of paper from the government saying we are married. Our family does better without it!

We do not need the government to be a third party in our relationship and will not seek permission or recognition which results in the extraction of any form of payment.

The marriage tax penalizes poeple who have the guts to make a leagal commitment to one person thus rewarding the millions out thier who shack up and use thier single status to leech off the system. I think if the system wants to "penalize" the married then they should do the same to those who live together by forcing them to file as joint.

wouldn't it make more sense for the government to want to encourage marriage by not increasing the tax bill for married couples? the IRS doesn't know what kind of bills we have, before or after marriage. jeez, who knew love had such a high price?

Wait until this duel income couple buys a house or has kids and they get hit by AMT. AMT now hits almost every married couple earning over $100k, not your definition of rich. Those not familiar with AMT, it is a flat tax on your income, that includes your wages. Your wages will be retaxed so your first dollar is taxed as much as your last. This is why it is difficult for moms to go back to work because with daycare, where is the income? A mom gets a part time job and every dollar will be taxed at over 40%, only $6k of her income can be used pretax for childcare, so her remaining aftertax income needs to exceed $12-16k to just cover daycare. Again - why hasn't this been corrected? Why does a single person pay less taxes than a married couples both making equal or less income than the single person?

Seriously... we shouldn't have to pay the Government to become married... it's really that simple. You don't pay for a license to remain single. The government simply shouldn't be involved with that decision...period..
