I am the person interviewed in this article, and I'd like to go on the record as saying that THINGS HAVE CHANGED. I've bid on two more hotels in the last two months, and have twice been placed in scary, scary neighborhoods even with a 3.5 star bid; one I already stayed in and one which prompted me to cancel an entire trip. While all that I said above WAS true given my prior experience, I've found that it is no longer true. I'm not sure what is going on right now--mid-June, 2012--but please use caution when using bidding sites.

Sometimes you can do things the old fashioned way and contact the hotel directly for a better rate. Occasionally a hotel will offer a room for a rate that is equal to the online rate minus the website's commission, particularly if it's a last-minute booking.
