That Elusive Emergency Fund: Why You Need It

I appreciate the 3 months emergency fund but this doesn't make sense for many baby boomers. This blanket statement is a bit limiting. For this divorcee@ 65 y.o. working full time trying to build my porfolio, it doesn't make sense to be putting money in a 2.9% emergency savings rather than investing in Roth or 403B with greater yield. I have one month emergency fund- If I lost job (bite my tongue) my Soc Sec and retirement would start earlier.

3-6-or 8 months is too generic a statement

At 89 and living on a fixed income of Social Security, I am where I will always be financially. This is an interesting article, but does not apply to me. Sorry about that. Wish I had some money to invest. Maybe, when I win the lottery I will contact the above author.

Money for unpredictable expenses such as house repair, car repair, appliance repair and replacement, insurance deductibles and emergency travel should have their own budget accounts. They should not be included in the Emergency Fund. The Emergency Fund should be used exclusively to deal with an interruption in income.

Unpredictable expenses are not unexpected. If you own a house, car, or are alive, you will eventually have to pay for house repairs, car repairs, and medical deductibles. Plan for these unpredictable expenses in advance by budgeting a little each month for them. And budget for an Emergency Fund, as well.
