You don't live in NY I guess....bringing a flask to a bar may save you a couple of bucks but would likely land you a black eye..

Question: Why did you convert your401k to an IRA? What was the advantage? I would not have a penalty for withdrawl because of my age. Any other reasons to roll over?

AA (Alcoholics Annonymous) has a saying, "Take what you need and leave the rest." With student loans about to kick in in 4 months the best thing for me to do is "hunker-down" as he did and cut costs every way possible. I have practically no income using my Social Security to maintain COBRA for myself and twin daughters. (I am 64; they are 23). I have a small one-room rental locked off from the house with it's own entrance, so that I have some privacy, but there isn't a lot of income and still quite a bit of debt. I have a 401(k) which (after converting as he did) I am going to use to pay off the loan, but I still have debt of $40k.

As for the ethical issue, throw the first stone if you haven't ever done anything illegal or unethical. I have been fighting myself each week as I complete the ESC form for unemployment insurance because I am not seeking work as I said. It is too deflating at my age and education to continually be refused a decent job, so I am not looking. That is a flagrant lie wittingly told each week submitting the form.

I am just about ready to go it alone without those funds. I am allowed at least 18 months. I have used about 6 months. With a small retirement income from another job, left overs from COBRA payments with the social security and my 401k, I intend to make it.

I think this guy was brilliant, no, is brilliant.

BRAVO!!!! and thanks for sharing!!!

Making six figures out of college doesnt hurt either...

Bringing a flask to a bar is not only illegal in most areas - better hope you don't get stopped while driving for an open container, too - but basically ripping off the bar owner. If you can't afford to buy their liquor and don't want to pay for the atmosphere, entertainment, etc., then stay home.

it is not realisitc that a student would have to much in savings. did daddy give him some dough?

Check out Dave Ramsey's financial advice. An passionate advocate of being debt free and practical, no nonsense teacher of how to do it, no matter how much you make or how much you owe. It can be done.

This story is nice for this guy, but is irrelevant for the average person who did not have the privilege to go to Harvard or makes $103k per year. If it was meant to be an article of "tips" on how to get rid of student loan debt then FAIL because most people do not have $70k to work with each year. Use a more realistic and common scenario to appeal to a wider audience. You should write about someone who started broke, went to a subpar state college, amassed thousands in debt, could not find a job for 8 months out, had a kid, then found a job for 40k, spent most money trying not to live in the ghetto and raising a child, but somehow this person paid off their debt in a matter of months. That would be a story worth reading, this in my opinion is not. I'm going to go read about Miami zombies, way more interesting and relevant.

Easy, when one makes over $100,000 a year. Most of us grads can't find a job at all. Any advice for the overwhelming majority??
