Many of the retirement communities in places such as the Sun Cities in Arizona have a multitude of learning opportunities brought right to their campuses through affiliations with ASU Lifelong Learning center.Nearby community colleges also offer wonderful educational opportunities through their RISE program. This coupled with affordable homes and wonderful winter weather make for a wonderful brainy retirement option.

This is the most ridiculous thing I probably ever read. You ommitted some of the most prestigious Ivy league towns, and what type of scientific poll was used for this nonsense? Try West Palm Beach, or the mountains of Tennessee if you want to find a good mix of intellect, wealth, and "brains". LOL
Sorry, but you dropped the ball on this article. Reston, Va? Wtf

There are so many wonderful and highly intellectual smaller cities and towns that come to mind and are probably "off the charts" in brain to population ratio compared to this shallow big city list for wannabes.
Try Brunswick Maine where Bowdoin College shares a great wealth of intellect and performance with the town. How about WIlliamstown, MA (Williams); Hanover N.H. (Dartmouth) and incredible places like Missoula, MT frequently called the Harvard of the West, or the American Paris. There are so many wonderful places that name droppers like your author wouldn't cut the mustard in. These are towns where retirees really are accomplished and are still contributing, not to mention, there is no line between the young and the old, the paid and the pensioned. Wisdom and experience are renewed by immersion with the young, idealistic and energetic. It's OK though. These quality retirement meccas wouldn't want to be on "The List" as true quality doesn't look for lists. Size alone. would make nearly every place on the list a no go for those looking for a quality, active and friendly intellectual experience. You fail to note that the most active, nature loving and athletic seniors are often the most intellegent.
They would have to vacation from retirement to find these qualities in any quantity in the places on your list!

Lake Oswego is nothing more than a privately owned lake surrounded by a bunch of overpaid lawyers and real estate developers. Any "culture" is a false one, created by a bunch of white-haired little old ladies. Brainiest? Who are you kidding? A bunch of outdoor sculptures does not make it "brainy". Lake Oswego is an incredibly false community.

How about a list of the most liberal places to retire for those of us who are sick of Republicans and vice versa.

Fairfield, Iowa probably tops the list with relationship to size.
A town of 10,000 in the Ag belt of Iowa and also home to Maharishi University of Management THE most progressive university in the world and pound for pound
more research and actualized creative potential.
The Transcendental Meditation program is at the core of the University and High School curriculum. More than 600 studies indicate that the regular practice of TM leads to rapid growth of full brain functioning.
Maharishi Vedic City on the edge of Fairfield is THE only city in the world fully planned according Maharishi Sthapatya Ved, the modern manifestation of ancient rules of Architecture and land planning fully in harmony with all the laws of nature.
WAY BEYOND GREEN.
We also have 800 Vedic Pundits in residence full time.
