As far as I am concerned, the people that are soo smart,do not have much common sence. I am in no means smart, but I retired in Denver, CO. I am doing fine and I don't have any problems surviving.

This town does have some amazing resources (Krannert Center, the Library, etc.) but it's too far from other places (Chicago, Indy, etc.) to make those resources practical for consideration in daily living.

However, it's the people that are the REAL problem here.

As such, I was delighted to see that Purdue (West Lafayette, IN) made the list!

As a resident of Champaign-Urbana (and embarrassed-to-be alum of UI), I am often astounded at the cold, snobby, holier-than-thou, open-minded-just-so-long-you-think-my-way attitudes of many of the residents here (confidence overrides competence here).

They keep calling this the 'Berkeley of the Heartland' but it's laughable- U of I WAS a good state school (no more than that), but it's sliding downhill FAST. The attitudes of the UI faculty/staff are as much to blame as the IL state budget, but they are blind to that possibility. They keep whining about how MUCH they've sacrificed, while enjoying numerous benefits that Illinois taxpayers provide (and don't have themselves). Folks here have NO clue as to how 'trim' a budget can be- just keep waiting for IL state handouts with no initiative as to how to effect positive change on their own.

Add those into the sighing, eye-rolling coastal transplants (who regard this as 'flyover country' but who are here because, frankly, they can't cut it in their professions on the coasts, as why ELSE would they be here?) and you have a very sour, constipated environment.

When you walk your dog on the sidewalks around here, people will look either startled or insulted if you actually smile and acknowledge them (and no, the dog IS well-behaved).

The weather's cold, and so are the people. VERY cold.

Congratulations to West Lafayette, a town that gets unfairly labeled as too gritty and coarse, but is a terrific town with NICE, SMART people!

Presumably energy costs must be high.

What about: Austin; Baton Rouge;

New Orleans (particularly post-Katrina with Tulane, University of New Orleans ), Loyola, Dillard, Xavier, LSU Medical and Dental Shools, Our Lady of Holy Cross and John Jay Beauty School?

It is so different from other places, even in the bay area!

Great choices. Marvelous research

My thoughts exactly. Larry Taylor is spot on about Berkeley. It's no surprise that Berkeleyans are so open-minded, and often (justifiably!!) self-rightous.

Uppper St Clair is a 1980's inspired remote bedroom community for those climbing the ladder. It isn't a walking community, doesn't have a central business district with cute shops nor does it have the charm of vintage housing like neighboring Mt Lebanon. This is a perplexing "award" to say the least. Oh I get it, you're referring to the new retiree which is where no one can afford to stop working!
