The Myrtle Beach, SC area is wonderful. We retired here from Michigan five years ago and love it. For the most part the weather is great, we have four seasons without snow, there are two colleges in the area, shopping is fantastic and the beaches are superb. People are friendly and the cost of living is low due to low taxes.

I am totally surprised that the Shoals area of Northwest Alabama is not included. It is located on the banks of the Tennessee River where life is really good. We have a variety of activities revolving around the lakes, parks and the University of North Alabama. Great medical facilities, low taxes, high achieving schools and friendly people await you. What more could you ask for?

I am surprised that no one mentioned the Villages in Central Florida. It is an enoumous active golf (and everything else) community. The entire community is golf cart friendly. Someties, you will see more golf carts than cars. There are 2 towns (eventually there will be 3) where there is 365 day a year entertainment from 5-9 PM. We have over 1000 clubs,(if you don't see one you want, start your own), around 46 pools and recreation centers, lots of shopping and only 1 hour away from Orlando. You can do as much or as little as you want. It has been dubbed "Florida's Friendliest Hometown". It is a piece of paradise in the middle of the country! Check it out:

Gig Harbor Washington is beautiful sitting between the Olympic Mountains on the west and Mt. Rainer on the East and sits on the Pudget Sound. Gorgeous Water and Mt views in every direction. Named in the top ten harbors in the united states. Quaint harbor town but also has all the modern conviences and a new hospital. Close to Seattle for all the big city has to offer: culter ,sports ,zoo's ,shopping then back to the peacefullness of Gig Harbor.

Huntsville is composed entirely of suburban sprawl, and is therefore totally dependent on automobiles. Anyone who lives long enough will eventually need to give up driving a car, at which time Huntsville will, for that person, become unliveable. People should retire to compact, walkable cities.

After vacationing here the past few years my husband and I will make Myrtle Beach our permanent residence soon. 11 months of sunshine and no more snow to shovel! There is just so much to do here all year long. It's one great way to keep ourselves fit all year long.

We both find the people of South Carolina to be very friendly and helpful, as well.

We live in Asheville - BEST place and plan to move nowhere when we retire in 3 yrs. Being from Rhinelander orginally, I would give it a vote if you like long winters. Great little town with a large lake in the middle and lakes everywhere around it. We still own property there to vacation at.
