Thank you for this note worthy advice. As a now, earlier than wanted to, retired stay at home mum who was in business and accounting, and helped run my husband's small business for about 17 years, this helps me see how things are and how to approach what little is left of my retirement funds since I've

had to finance my daughter's college fund and eduation since she missed a scholarship by 1 point. I withdrew, at a penalty, some of my retirement moneis, to pay off our old house, that is in need of some repairs, but this lift a weight off my husband's back since he is now the sole breadwinner due to a change of structure within our company and a small, agreed upon paycut by several members of that staff he is n ow working with. He is still under tremendous pressure to 'PERFORM' AND TO STOP THE BLEEDING".

He has a very taxing job on him, at his age, which is over 50, and has had

many falls off ladders and had to jump over risers and bleachers to take photos - the School Picture Business - and has had to deal with IRATE PARENTS AND YEARBOOK STAFF, with some people covering their tales in order to KEEP THEIR TENURE, so you see, this has been a big WAKE UP CALL TO ALL.

Thank you so much for this editorial and for helping to try and keep us all on the RIGHT TRACK. IF YOU COME TO A FORK IN THE ROAD....TAKE IT...OR PICK IT UP...HAVE A GREAT ST. PADDY'S DAY ON WEDNESDAY.. DIA DIUT, GO NEERY AN BOTHA LEAT!! TOP O THE MORNING TO YE.. TIS NOT OURSELVES YE'LL BE FLYING WI TODAY.

The options available to me in the handful of 401 funds at my company is pathetic! The administrators also said I could not trade out of the fund unless i severed employment!

With the white collar criminals, stock market manipulators, what's the small guy to do.

"As recently as the end of last month, for example, Sextant International (SSIFX), the top-ranked foreign large blend fund, had roughly 40 percent of its portfolio stashed away in cash."

Given the performance of the markets over the last year, isn't this an admission that they failed to buy shares at heavy discount after the market downturn and are now left waiting and hoping for the next market correction?

Went to a new broker and he said forget mutuals - fees are too high. Go with ETF's! But are they as safe if the market drops 800pts. again??

Opinion: With little alternative and much encouragement, we have all pumped our monies into 401k plans and mutual funds for retirement savings. These monies going into Wall Street had nothing to do with value of the stocks. It was just money looking for a home. As baby boomers retire and convert their mutual funds into cash to live on, the inflated stock market will and must shrink. It won't be pretty.

Mutual fund investing is a necessity to future financial comfort. So I was told. However, I didn't have a lot of money, and now I have less. thanks folks.

Because of meteroic gain of DOW from 7K to 10K, most funds are showing enormous gains. Donot expect more than 10% gain next year! this is common sense.

I think the article is a little light on the value of index funds. A good index fund will have:

lots of stock or bond issues (safety in numbers);

very low mgmt expenses (maybe half of an active fund);

very low transaction expenses (they buy and hold = again half);

the chance to participate in the broad market.
