The numbers don't lie. Anyone who thinks they are doing the right thing by investing in low cost index funds instead of using a qualified financial advisor and investing in actively managed funds is an idiot. You can get a much higher net return in many actively managed funds and also get all of the other benefits of having an advisor.

I presume the total returns are AFTER expenses and if they are then the numbers don't lie. Even with their higher expenses these actively managed funds have apparently done better than the index funds unless you think the returns are exaggerated?

No way to reflect customer service in unrealized appreciation...but Vanguard not only wins low expense but also customer service...

The low cost index funds always come in last.

Anyone care to guess which side of Mr Ben Baden's bun is being buttered?

This article is terrible, performance chasing at its worst. Look at any fund that was in the top 10% 5 years ago, I'm talking about CGMFX, FAIRX, SLASX, all have tanked. Honestly for the average investor best is an index fund.

Great way to investigate things - look at some of these funds, read about them, and then see where that information leads as other resources are discovered - its pretty interesting. The "Permanent Fund" is a great case in point, as are all of the low expense ratios and decent returns at Vanguard.

The most proven strategy is to select funds with low expense ratios. Anyone who ignores that inconvenient truth is probably shoveling kickbacks into their early retirement fund.

Why does anyone believe that he who has done well in the past, he will do well in the future?

This is how mutual funds play on investor emotions.

I was disappointed that I never found the 8 Funds to watch for 2011 article. I tried several different approaches within this link.

However, even before attempting to access the article, the title presents another question, when to buy? Watching is easy, buying and/or selling, as addressed in one of your other articles is much harder task to master(profitablly).
