It’s not often that you see a bond fund lose 32 percent in a year. But then again, you won’t find many that can gain 72 percent in a year either. Those were Fidelity Capital & Income’s tumultuous statistics for 2008 and 2009, when the fund experienced a devastating drop and a blistering rise. As these numbers suggest, this high-yield fund, which specializes in the junkiest of junk bonds, is quite volatile. But investors who stick with it have plenty of chances to be rewarded. Notably, for the trailing 15-year period, the fund has annualized returns upwards of 8 percent.
