As a resident here, I do agree that San Luis Obispo is a beautiful area, but the problem is that even in today's economy, housing prices are high, and there has never been enough jobs. Jobs are hard to come by, with the main employers being Diablo Nuclear Power Plant and Cal Poly. It's a good place to retire or attend college, but a hard place to try to support a family, so reconsider before moving here. Many residents commute as far as Los Angeles or the Bay Area for work!

I am a single mother with a son with autism and a daughter with PDD-NOS. I am presently living in Florida. The medicaid waiver stinks and so do the schools. My son is brilliant and needs a good middle school, a good medicaid waiver program, and good benefits. I need to find a place that is low in crime, has a reasonable cost of living, good schools for both children, and a good med waiver program.
Any suggestions?

I enjoyed the article. As a Cal Poly Graduate I was surprised to see San Luis Obispo in your list. I recently moved to North Carolina and have enjoyed an overall quality of life and a town home purchase which was almost impossible in CA even in the best of times.
I found some great areas and communities listed in the site "livesouth" (com).

Albuquerque COULD be a nice town, if it wasn't the methamphetamine capital of the country, or if it didn't have the high crime rate or a terrible school system. Oh, and the politicians are about the worst you will find anywhere.
The good areas of town are relegated to a fraction of the city's size.
Gangs are rampant as well.
If you like graffiti, you will find it everywhere.
The scenery is nice and the mountains are great, but it is NOT a good city.
I lived there for a long time.
