Best Places to Live 2009

For those reading these comments, please be aware of the "friendly" football rivalry between Auburn (Tigers) and Tuscaloosa (Crimson Tide), Alabama, and it looks like there's a number of Crimson Tide fans on here making negative comments about Auburn. I moved here from the northeast 5 years ago and couldn't be more pleased with my neighbors and the quality of life here. I'm beyond excited that we made it to the list and we are definitely in good company!

Interested in living in #2 Auburn/Opelika, check out the new golf community National Village. www.nationalvillage.com. Great estate homes and cottages. Next to Grand National and the #1 Marriott hotel in the U.S.

I miss Auburn so much. Auburn is a beautiful college town with small community charm. It also has the advantage of being relatively close to larger metropolis areas as well as rural outdoors… I actually lived in Opelika. It's a wonderful old southern railroad town with SO much charm. It has fantastic small town events in every season.

St. Augustine is a wonderful place to live... I lived there for four years while attending Flagler College... which your slideshow erroneously calls "Fishter College." Any way you could fix that?

Not only are there many things to do in Auburn you're just a short car ride from many other recreational opportunites. And let's not forget the Beautiful Campus of the Auburn Tigers where there always seems to be a concert, play or sporting event going on. It's a great place to grow up, raise kids, live and retire.

Auburn is a great place to live and I am so glad someone has now recognized it. It is a great place to raise a family and with one of the top school systems in the south, it's a great place to educate your children. Opelika (it's sister city) is wonderful - by the way, buymyopelikahome.com is a great place to start if you'd like to buy a house in the area. Taxes are low and there is always a number of tings to do. Thanks for listing it!

I am from Mobile, AL originally but went to Auburn University and lived there for 6 years while obtaining my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I moved away for 10 years before returning and I can say even though I had a great experience as a student, I didn't really appreciate the community until I came back. It is a wonderful place to raise a family and the people are so nice, friendly and helpful. Schools are great and so are parks and area activities. I am not surprised Auburn made this list. (By the way, its sister city, Opelika, is fabulous too!)

Lemme guess....you have a picture of Bear Bryant over your mantle? Right? I seriously doubt your state is Hawaii, or was that you just telling us HI????

I have been to many of these cities and it's a respectable list.

My husband and I relocated to Boise in 1996 after living in Seattle (too much traffic), California (too many people), and places inbetween. We LOVE Boise for the friendly people, mild weather, and great outdoors. This is one place we will never move from and many of our family and friends have moved here too because it is such a great place to live and raise a family, retire, and recreate. Come to Idaho and see what we have to offer.
