honestly the OP maybe considered "rich" but as an average middle class citizen (freshman in hs)i think its the perfect ideal area to raise children. The crime rate is extremely low here and the academics are top notch.
i actually often compare the OP to plano because my best friends live there. Plano is bigger, with more asians, therefore, its an automatic competitive environment for academics.
and durrrr. drugs are everywhere;; thats inevitable.

"At the same time, [Edison] also offers organized youth leagues for everything from softball to lacrosse."
...who lives in Edison for the softball and lacrosse? Not that I have anything against them, it's just that around here, Edison, especially the north half, is known for having the highest percentage of Asian Indians of any place in the US.
I'm a JPS HS graduate at Rutgers, and if anyone is thinking about living in (north) Edison here's some info:
-Our schools are ridiculously overcrowded. Then again, Asia is crowded, and JP is 60% Asian, so I guess we tolerate it.
-Our schools are ridiculously competitive in the top 10%. About 15 people in the class of 2009 ended up going to an Ivy League, and I'm sure even more were accepted.
-Our football is mediocre at best, but our marching band is pretty damn good.
-So is our choir, orchestra, yearbook, Odyssey of the Mind, and Model UN.
-The town votes overwhelmingly Democrat. I don't even know who's running for mayor on the Republican ticket, to be honest.
-Oak Tree Road feels like a different country. India, to be precise.
-Did I mention how crowded our high school is? Backpacks aren't allowed in the hallways except at the beginning and end of school.

Edison is varied. And for close-minded people this really probably can be seen as a problem.
But for the rest of us who actually enjoy getting the best and brightest of society, who realize there are cultures other than our own, who know that the United States was built on drawing from the world as a whole...then Edison is a model for the melting pot notion.
I was born and raised in Edison. Just because what was the white majority (and I'm part of it) might be giving way to other from India, Korea, and other countries doesn't mean it's a problem. I'm thankful every day for being raised around others different from myself because when you're all grown up and in the real world, you'll be interacting with people from all over the place...and having an understanding and open mind will help you immensely. Living in a magical bubble where it's just you, your white friends who cut their lawn on weekends, and your cat is nothing but naive.
You should be ashamed. There was a time your kind (whatever it is) wasn't here yet either...and America opened its arms to you. Edison proves the world can live together without clashes. Everyone everywhere can learn a lesson from our town.

I like the Asian Indian community in Edison, one of my best friends is Indian, and his family is very loving and welcoming--if you don't like Asian Indians, move.
There are 9 other places listen on this list Kathleen.
Quite frankly, you don't have to be open to the notion of living amongst a dense Asian Indian population. Additionally, if you are under the impression that America isn't what it used to be, why don't you figure out where your ancestors are from (Unless they're Native American Indians) and move back to your country--America doesn't need you. Just in case you're really that ignorant, I'd like to inform you that the United States is full of diversity--our President is of an African American heritage.
If you have a significant problem with either Asian Indians or people of Hispanic decent, or anyone that doesn't look like you, you're welcome to leave.

James.
Why are you citing articles from 10 years ago. Get over it.
You may not like Plano, but as parent I love it. In the schools that my chilldren are in Parents are extremely involved. There are usually more volunteers than needed. PISD does a great job of trying to keep parents involved in their children's education. Yes, there is parent/child homework in elementary school. That is in place to foster a relationship. I have never had any problems with teachers or administrators because they care about the children. They have lots of tutoring opportunities in place to help the student and in talking with students in upper grades the are well educated, well adjusted and goal oriented. You couldn't ask for more from a school district.
As for stress levels and drugs? You will have that anywhere you go. The PTA's and schools have been working hard on educating our children on drugs and drug awareness starting in Kindergarden. It is not an issue that is swept under the carpet. We are working very hard to try to keep our children off of drugs.
I am honored that Plano was chosen in the top 10. We have worked very hard to try to get over the drug scandal of the 90's, and are still working hard to keep our children off of drugs of all kinds.
