The action taken to local and national disasters is great but it's a real shame that so many citizens take advantage of the sad situations.

I mean everytime there is an earthquake, a flood, an oil spill - there's always a group of heartless people who rip off tax payers.

This is in response to reading that 4 of Oprah Winfreys "angels" got busted ripping off the system. Shame on them!

Interesting article, Matthew Bandyk. I'm wondering if you get a chance to read the comment thread and respond.

JOn Mission Viejo, California---------

My guess is that having a very dysfunctional city council helps to stimulate community involvement.

One councilman who CONSISTENTLY lies !

One councilman with anger management problems !

One phony goody two shoes ( trolling for contributions ) council woman !

One councilman who gets tangled in his comments !

One councilwomen who infuriates the city staff !

Guess which is which–not hard to figure out is it.

A few thousand dollars can make a differnce. Some people are consumed by material or evil world. Like in evansville. A very good congressman lost. And very little of explanation of why their was ignorance in campaign. Also a taunt by oppsition cause of dominance. Caring moralist hurt. Also Why not do major campaign for new righteous republican politicians. This is 100% ignorant to me. Usa had more recruiting from poverty stricken usa businesses. None in south in. Also watchout for liberal and the mean to have conspiracy against moralist and true christians. Mean pres beating his moralist wife? Conformity by groups cause problems or troubles. Collide with righteous and confused. Such as marijuana. Marijuana stops violence and anger. Supposed to eat it. Not smoke it. Smoke causes cancer. Also a lot of usa citizen were born with money. Parents help. A lot never delt with poverty. So laws have not been put in a place. Uncaring has happened. Also recreation has been cheap. So a lot sit at home unhappy. Major to some. Minor to others. Well thank you. Psalm99:9-outside pray. Be ready for evil mobs. rev 12:9. 1 corinth 14:26. Col 3:11. Righteouness not self righteouness, not fairness. But some compassion. Help true christians. Go east MO christians.

Since you chose Asheville as one of the top cities for political junkies, I think it's important to differentiate between the city itself and the county in which it is located. Asheville voters tend to be progressive; Buncombe County voters are more conservative in their voting patterns.

As I recall, in 2004 Kerry received more votes in Asheville than Bush. Despite this fact, Bush carried Buncombe County as a whole. It's interesting to note that in the 2004 Buncombe County Democratic Primary, Dennnis Kucinich came in first, Howard Dean second and John Kerry third. In 2008, of course, Obama won Asheville overwhelmingly and the entire county by a significant margin as well.

Your article gives, in narrative style, a general sense of how the top-10 cities were picked — but leaves a lot unsaid. It should be fairly easy to provide tables of cities plotted against variables, to show how each city or town stacked up in each dimension.

To not provide such source data in today's world is to treat readers as dummies or passive.

That's the perspective from one media junky and newspaper publisher in one of your top-10 towns.
