With housing prices interest rates as low as they are in Florida right now and no state income tax, it's almost as cheap as living in a risky 3rd world country. The Philippines has a low level war going on and what kind of health care will you get when you need emergency care?

I fully understand the emigrant's U.S.citizen point. However, American retirees abroad even in less developed countries should base their assessment not on how currupt can be the local governments, since their more simple life of a retiree is not going to criss-cross with local authorities as frequently as if they were in working and tax-paying age.

The most important issue is whether they feel comfortable being part of the particular location (neighbors, environment, etc), not local politicians, politics, police. The above opinion is definitely an exaggeration. He is looking at his development country as poor destination destination choice not being in the shoes of a retiree, but his shoes ignoring the fact that the retirees are going to live different life than he had before his immigration to U.S.

After all, the fact that locals in some less developed countries suffer economically and feel mistreated by their own authorities, so they immigrated in droves to U.S. doesn't mean that American retiree can't have a peaceful much cheaper and safe retirement in the same very countries. If you read what other U.S. citizen are commenting, you should realize that American retiree can have wonderful retirement in many places abroad, which are less developed, without worry. Simply think out-of-the-box, do not make your retirement decision based on fears and prejudices only, especially when they are coming from outraged and angry immigrants. Make informed decision in order to really stretch your dollar abroad.rcearcut

There are many countries that offer opportunities for retirement. Do not be afraid of the governments as they all want you to bring money to their countries. Yes you must pay something for the privilege to live there, but you do that here also and a lot more costly. I have lived in a number of countries because my job took me there. I have traveled to many more countries. What I have learned is that if you humble yourself a little and do not beat your chest yelling “I am an American and I have rights”, you will get along anyplace you go. Just remember that every person puts their pants on the same way, no one is different. In foreign countries your money will go so much farther, but you also will need to lower your living standard some. You really do not need a 3, 500 square foot house to live in. I am totally comfortable living in 1,000 square feet with room to spare. I live in a tropical country without air conditioning by adjusting my body to accept the heat as normal. I ride the local transportation with my neighbors. We attend local events, birthday parties, and celebrations with the local people. We stay out of their politics.

We hire local repairmen to fix the house and property, ladies to help with washing and household chores and we pay the standard wages. Do not flaunt your money! Do not ever cheat anyone ever. It is much better for you to feel cheated out of a couple of dollars than to create bad relationships in the community. As a foreigner you can say that you think someone is wrong, but do not make an issue of it. Remember that they think and reason much different than you do. Besides a couple of dollars will not break you. Always, and I do mean ALWAYS get an agreed price before you go ahead with any transaction. In most countries people work by the day, not by the hour. Many labors will work by the job, but this will always give you some heartburn because what they consider to be the job will not agree with your ideas. So you need to write down the job requirements and agree (sign) to them in advance. I hire all work done by the day and I direct the job. No short-cuts, and yes they will take their time, So What! It is still cheap labor and they will do a good job, plus they will always come back and work for you again.

Be reasonable, be friendly, be a good neighbor, but most of all be humble. Remember you are just a guest in their country, act like one. This will reward you with a very good life for many years.

The best place to retire is Argentina. Lots of culture, friendly people, almost everybody speaks english and if they don't thet are very helpful. I visited several times and it is really great, there are lots of americans and british retired there.

Buenos Aires is really very nice, and they have excelelnt Drs, prepaid medicine, affordable. And also free Hospitals for people who cannot pay.

Sorry Rausky79 of FL @ Apr 06, but all those " low class, nasty people, political corruption, high crime" and police corruption might be just the nom in most developing nations. You must have been born in the USA and lived here all your life. Thus, you do not quite appreciate the freedom and safety this great country provides. I chose to be a US citizen. I will not trade Miami with any developing nation's city. I will visit when I am young and able bodied, but to retire there NEVER!!

Kennewick and local Tri-Cities area may have jobs but they are for high tech jobs for the Nuclear reactor and area. Labor and Service jobs are just not there, but with all these websites saying Kennewick is growing - tons of people are coming here and not finding anything. Research before coming.
