The decade was even harsher on households’ net worth. Median wealth fell by 28 percent, to $93,150 from almost $130,000. Net wealth, which can serve as an emergency fund in case of a job loss or a savings account to pay for big life expenses such as retirement, is a key indicator of financial security.
