Individuals who meet the requirements for having to buy health insurance, but do not sign up, will be subject to penalties for themselves and uncovered family members. Penalties for 2014 will be $95 per adult and $47.50 per child. The penalty will be capped at $285 for a family or 1 percent of household income (whichever is greater). Each year, the penalty increases, but there is no penalty for a gap in coverage for three months or less.
