Despite the near-constant hum of dismal economic data, some states are still doing relatively well. Maryland and Virginia benefit from their proximity to the nation’s capital and its healthy supply of jobs, while relatively high oil prices have given natural resource-rich states like Alaska a boost. Proximity to the financial and cultural hub of New York City has helped other states such as New Jersey and Connecticut sustain relatively strong economies.
