I just wanted to share this site, www.thecaringspace.com
It really helped my family when we were looking for in home assistance for my mother. Right now, families sign up for free, so we had unlimited access to their entire network of caregivers, as well as the ability to arrange interviews through their free conference call service. We thought this site was a great resource and we just wanted to pass it along to anyone else who is looking for someone to help take care of a loved one . Good luck!

As a Financial Advisor in Center City Philadelphia, I have sold long term care insurance to many of my clients, including myself, over the last 15+ years. My goal, for myself and my clients, has always been to age in place; at the same time “expect the best and plan for the worst”. Now, happily, Penn’s Village is in my neighborhood, but I am not cancelling my LTC insurance policy. What we must consider is that not everyone ages “gracefully”; what type of services we might need that fall outside of the volunteer arena, and when it might become impossible to live at home. My mother, now age 92 lived successfully in a retirement community for 5 years, during which time she had care and help from certified home health aides (paid for by her LTC insurance), geriatric care managers and, of course, from my brother and me. Eventually, medical necessity made it impossible for mom to live at home or in assisted living. She now has been living in a nursing home for 4 ½ years, with the help of a part-time companion. Mom participates in almost all of the daily activities and feels that it is her community. She says she is on vacation.

I live alone and find that having one or more pets is great. When my Springer Spaniel died about a year ago, I was quite surprized at the gap she left. I live alone and, even though I thought I could not replace her, I finally realized the gap was the lack of a dog. My daughter and I located a dog through the Springer Spaniel Rescue and he is just great. I am not the least bit lonely now and I also have two cats and they all get along fine. You must remember that when it comes to cat and dog, the cat rules. So just leave them handle it themselves. I hope it helps someone out there to find that if they need some companianship, try a pet. You also meet other people when exercising your pet and you also get more exercise yourself. So good luck to anyone who is helped with an animal.

If kids and grandkids had a clear understanding of why and how nursing homes (AND L-T care "insurance") make their extended families both poorer and unhappier, THEY (the young ones) would be leading the charge for "aging in place."

Why not build a model in each community that allows its members (paying and non paying) to remain in the home by planning in advance and to avert crisis by using local resources like financial planning, elder law specialists, universal design handypersons, in-home health care providers, real estate property management and the other services mentioned above but with that model coordinator giving back to its members via charity donations, scholarships or to subsidize lower income members wanting to tap into the local and caring services. Interested folks would want to know if they can afford to remain in the home and if you're lucky enough to live near Montgomery County, MD, that model is operational already at WealthOne.

How did Nancy Mccarthy start Community without
walls program. I would be interested in starting a group like this in my area.
