10 Best Outdoorsy Places to Retire

Not one of the places listed is in the Midwest.

I plan to reitre in 521 days. In planning, I chose to purchase a home for a very reasonable price in an Indiana town of 1500 people. It is a mile square. When I retire, I can walk to the post office, the library, the grocery store, the hardware, a Dollar General, and the Senior Citizens. There is a taxi service within the county for $1.50 one way. There is a town park with a quarter-mile track. I like that one because the longer track at the elementary/junior high does not have trees. The town is 40 miles from a college town that has touring Broadway shows as well as plays performed by college students. The capital is 70 miles away if you really want to go to a big city. The only disadvantage is that you need to accept that it is a small town and you will always be an outsider. Change happens slowly. This type of town doesn't make a national listing but it definitely will be great for retirement.

All this is very good, but you left out two of the most of important things a retiree looks for: cost of living, and quality/cost of health care. That is what most retirees look for when they retire.
