WORKING AND PAYING INTO SOCIAL SECURITY UNTIL AGE 70 PROVIDES A HIGHER BASIS FOR CALCULATION OF THE HIGHER PAYOUT. THE HIGHER BASIS CANNOT BE ACCOMPLISHED IF PAYMENTS TO SOCIAL SECURITY ARE STOPPED PRIOR TO AGE 70. THE MUCH HIGHER MONTHLY SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK IS ACHIEVED BY ONLY THOSE WHO WORK AND PAY INTO SOCIAL SECURITY UNTIL AGE 70. LIVING LONG ENOUGH IS THE ONLY CERTAIN WAY TO RECEIVE AN OVERALL MAXIMUM PAYOUT.

IF you start collecting at age 62 versus age 66, it will take 16 years of payments until you have received the identical sum of money from the government....age 78. Assume 3% annual inflation and the buying power of the money has decreased by 48%.....the government will not tell you that.

When to start makes little difference for a single person with average life expectancy. However for a married man with a wife a few years younger, it makes a world of difference. She'll life long enough to benefit from a delayed start. I'll start early, withdraw and re-start at 70 ..... for her benefit.
